Where Oklahoma’s Public Health Jobs Are

The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) is the state’s largest public health employer. It works through five service branches: Community Health, Family Health Services, Prevention and Preparedness, Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and Protective Health Services. It also backs a statewide network of county health departments that give immunizations, run family planning and well-baby clinics, and handle environmental health.

Two big exceptions matter if you want to work in a city. Tulsa and Oklahoma County run independent city-county health departments outside the state system, so they hire on their own. At the other end, seven rural counties have no health department of their own: Alfalfa, Cimarron, Dewey, Ellis, Nowata, Roger Mills and Washita.

The degree reaches the top of the agency. Oklahoma’s Commissioner of Health, Keith Reed, lists an MPH and the CPH credential after his name. The CPH certification guide explains that exam.

Only Two Oklahoma Schools Are CEPH Accredited

This is the first thing to check in Oklahoma. Of the five universities with public health master’s degrees, only the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (home to the Hudson College of Public Health) and the University of Central Oklahoma are on CEPH’s accredited list. Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OSU Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa and Northeastern State University in Tahlequah aren’t. If a job you want lists CEPH accreditation in its requirements, read the CEPH accreditation guide before choosing on price.

In 2025 the Oklahoma legislature created a framework for certifying community health workers, and OSDH now publishes the application and a list of approved training programs. The law is explicit, though: certification isn’t required to work as a CHW in Oklahoma. For MPH graduates who manage outreach programs, that means your staff may arrive with or without the credential. The community health worker career page covers what the role pays.
