MPH Dual Degree Programs
What JD/MPH and Other Dual-Degree MPH Programs Are There?
A JD/MPH lets you earn a law degree and a Master of Public Health together, usually in less time than earning them back to back: Harvard's joint JD/MPH takes three academic years, and Emory's takes 7 semesters. This site lists 621 dual-degree and combined MPH options at 174 schools in 45 states. After medicine (86 pairings), law and social work are the most common partners, with 47 each, followed by pharmacy (37) and business (34). Compare them below, or see the MD/MPH programs if you're headed for medicine.

A dual-degree MPH pairs the Master of Public Health with a second graduate or professional degree, such as a JD, MSW, MBA, PharmD or DVM. You study for both at once, and each school counts some of the other’s coursework, so you finish sooner than you would by earning the degrees one after the other.
Which Dual-Degree Pairings Exist
This site tracks 621 dual-degree and combined MPH options at 174 schools. Here is how often each partner degree shows up:
| Paired with the MPH | Programs | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| MD | 86 | Physicians in prevention, policy or research (MD/MPH guide) |
| JD | 47 | Health law, regulation, policy |
| MSW | 47 | Social work plus program and population work |
| BS (accelerated bachelor’s to MPH) | 41 | Undergraduates saving a year (accelerated MPH) |
| PharmD | 37 | Pharmacists in population health |
| MBA | 34 | Health care management and business |
| MS | 34 | Research and technical specialties |
| PhD | 21 | Researchers adding practice training |
| DVM | 18 | Veterinarians in zoonotic and food safety work |
| MA | 17 | Area studies, anthropology, psychology |
| MPA | 15 | Government management |
| DMD | 12 | Dentists |
| DO | 11 | Osteopathic physicians |
| DDS | 9 | Dentists |
| MPP | 8 | Public policy analysis |
| MHA | 8 | Hospital and health system administration |
| MSN | 3 | Nurses moving into population health |
Another 157 options pair the MPH with something less common: optometry (UAB’s MPH/OD), audiology (UAMS’s AuD/MPH), city planning, journalism and divinity among them. Names vary too. The same pairing appears as “MBA/MPH” at 11 programs and “MPH/MBA” at 9, so search both ways when you research a school.
How a Dual Degree Saves You Time
The saving comes from credit sharing: each school accepts a set number of credits from the other degree toward its own requirements. Schools publish the exact rules, and they vary a lot:
- Emory JD/MPH: 7 semesters. The law school waives 11 elective credit hours and Rollins waives 10.
- UConn (JD, MSW or PharmD with the MPH): 12 credits from the other program meet MPH requirements.
- Minnesota PharmD/MPH: up to 14 PharmD credits transfer into the MPH, which you can finish online.
- Colorado State MPH-DVM: a combined 5-year program; up to 12 or 15 DVM credits count, depending on which degree you start first.
- Yale MSN/MPH: the public health side drops from 20 course units to 15.
The accreditation rules set a floor on how far this can go. The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) requires every MPH to total at least 42 semester credits, or 56 quarter credits, and dual-degree students must still show every MPH competency. A combined program can share credits, but it can’t hand out an MPH for less than the full degree’s work.

JD/MPH Programs: What the Law Pairing Looks Like
JD/MPH programs are the most searched dual degree, and 47 programs on this site offer the pairing. Length ranges widely, which is the first thing to compare:
| Program | Length | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard joint JD/MPH | 3 academic years | First year at Harvard Law only; years two and three at both schools; 45-credit MPH |
| Emory JD/MPH | 7 semesters | 79 JD credit hours plus at least 32 MPH credit hours, with electives waived on both sides |
| UCLA MPH in Health Policy/JD | 4 years | 78 quarter units on the MPH side |
| UAMS JD/MPH | Varies | Separate applications plus a declaration of intent filed before your first MPH semester |
The spread is the point: Harvard fits both degrees into three academic years, while UCLA’s version runs four. Before you apply, compare each program’s length with the time you’d spend earning the two degrees one after the other.
Is a JD/MPH Worth It?
It earns its keep when your goal sits at the meeting point of law and health: drafting health regulations, advising a health department, litigating environmental or tobacco cases, or working on health policy in government. If you want to practice general law, the MPH is a nice extra rather than a requirement. Ask each program where its JD/MPH graduates work before you commit to the added cost.
MSW/MPH Dual Degree Programs
Social work is tied with law as the second most common partner, with 47 programs. The MSW prepares you for direct practice with individuals and families; the MPH adds the tools to design and evaluate programs for whole populations.
- Boise State finishes both degrees in three years with 80 combined credit hours.
- UC Berkeley runs a concurrent MSW/MPH with three MPH concentration choices, including Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health, and accepts current Berkeley students as well as new applicants.
- San Diego State, University of Alaska Anchorage and Samford also offer the pairing.
Field work is the part to plan early. Both degrees require supervised practice, so ask whether one placement can count toward both.
MBA/MPH and MHA/MPH: The Management Pairings
The business pairing appears 34 times on this site, the MPA 15 times and the MHA 8 times. An MBA/MPH suits you if you want to run a health system, a health technology company or a consulting practice. At the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the MBA comes from the University of Nebraska Omaha, and the combined program takes 3 to 4 years. UAB offers both an MPH/MBA and an MPH/MSHA.
The MHA/MPH is narrower. The MHA trains you for hospital and health system administration, the MPH for population-level work. If you’re choosing only one, the MPH vs MHA guide walks through the difference, and the health services manager career page shows what that path pays.
Clinical Pairings: PharmD, DVM, MSN and Dental
Clinical programs make up a big share of the list: 37 PharmD pairings, 18 DVM, 12 DMD and 9 DDS, plus physical therapy and physician assistant options. These usually fold the MPH into a clinical program you’re already in.
- PharmD/MPH: Minnesota takes students from any accredited pharmacy school and lets you finish the MPH online. UConn and UAMS offer it too.
- DVM/MPH: Colorado State gives you two routes. Start with 12 months of MPH study, then begin veterinary school, or apply during your fourth DVM year and finish the MPH in as little as 3 semesters after graduating.
- MSN/MPH: only 3 programs use this name. Yale’s takes three years, four if you’re entering nursing without an RN, with the first year spent full time at the School of Public Health.
How Admission to a Dual Degree Works
Expect two admissions decisions, not one. Emory, Boise State, UCLA and UAMS all require separate applications to each school, and UNMC says plainly that getting into one program doesn’t guarantee a seat in the other. That means two sets of requirements, two deadlines, and sometimes two application systems: the public health side often runs through SOPHAS, while law, medicine and veterinary schools use their own services.
Timing also varies. Some programs want you to apply to both at the start. Others, like Colorado State’s DVM-first route or Berkeley’s concurrent MSW/MPH, let you add the MPH once you’re enrolled in the other degree. If you’re already in a professional program, check whether your school has a pathway before you apply anywhere else.
Choosing a Dual-Degree MPH Program
Use this checklist to compare programs:
- Total length. Compare the combined program with the two degrees taken separately. Harvard’s JD/MPH takes three academic years; UCLA’s takes four.
- Shared credits. Ask for the number in writing. UConn counts 12 credits, Minnesota up to 14, and at Emory each school waives 10 or 11 elective hours.
- Accreditation. Check that the MPH side is CEPH-accredited. The CEPH accreditation guide shows how to verify it.
- Concentration choice. Some dual degrees limit your MPH options. Berkeley’s MSW/MPH allows three concentrations; Emory’s JD/MPH allows seven.
- Tuition rules. Find out which school bills you in each term and at what rate.
- Placements. Ask whether one internship or practicum can meet both degrees’ requirements.
If you only need public health skills, not a full second degree, a graduate certificate in public health is a lighter alternative, and the how long is an MPH guide shows how long the stand-alone degree takes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a JD/MPH Worth It?
It pays off when your target job sits where law and health meet, such as health regulation, public health law or policy work, and when the program shortens the path. Harvard's joint JD/MPH fits both degrees into three academic years. If the combined program adds a full year or more, weigh that year's tuition against how often your target jobs ask for both credentials.
Is an MSW/MPH Worth It?
It suits you if you want to do clinical or case-level social work and also run or evaluate programs for whole populations. Boise State finishes both degrees in three years with 80 combined credit hours, and Washington University, Saint Louis University, UCLA and Johns Hopkins all offer the pairing.
Do You Have to Apply Separately to Each Program?
Usually, yes. Emory, Boise State, UCLA, UAMS and the University of Nebraska Medical Center all require separate applications to both schools, and UNMC states that admission to one program doesn't guarantee admission to the other.
Can You Add the MPH After Starting Your Other Degree?
At many schools, yes. Colorado State lets current DVM students apply to the MPH in the fall of their fourth DVM year, and Berkeley's concurrent MSW/MPH accepts current Berkeley MSW or MPH students as well as new applicants.
Is There an MSN/MPH Dual Degree?
Yes, though it's rarer. This site lists 3 programs named MSN/MPH. Yale's takes three years, or four for students entering nursing without a prior RN, and Emory also offers an MSN/MPH.
