Who Hires Public Health Graduates in Missouri

Missouri’s public health system is unusually decentralized. The state has 115 local public health agencies, and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) says they operate independently of each other and of state and federal agencies. Most were formed under Chapter 205 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri, which lets a county levy a property tax for public health and gives the agency an elected board of trustees. Others answer to county commissions or city and county councils.

For a job seeker, that means 115 separate employers, each with its own governing body and budget. DHSS ties them together through contracts to deliver services, many funded by the CDC, so state program roles in communicable disease, epidemiology and environmental health often work hand in hand with local staff.

The easiest way in is a paid internship. DHSS and Missouri State University’s MPH program run a statewide internship, funded by the CDC’s Public Health Infrastructure Grant, that places students at local agencies and DHSS. It pays $20 per hour for up to 320 hours (a maximum of $6,400), and it’s open to students from any university and recent graduates. Hybrid placements are allowed, but fully remote ones aren’t funded. Application deadlines fall in April for summer, June for fall and November for spring.

Five Accredited Schools, Mostly Private

Every Missouri school with a public health master’s program is CEPH accredited, so accreditation won’t narrow your list. Ownership will: three of the five schools are private nonprofits.

  • Washington University in St. Louis has a full School of Public Health and awarded 200 public health master’s degrees in 2022-23, the most in Missouri, plus 8 dual degrees. Its 33-credit Master of Population Health Sciences can be finished in as few as 10 months at $1,560.00 per credit for 2026-27, for estimated tuition of $51,480.
  • A.T. Still University in Kirksville runs its MPH online over 2 years and 42 credit hours, and it awarded 164 degrees. It also offers a 48-credit MPH with a dental emphasis, a niche few schools cover.
  • Saint Louis University prices its 42-credit MPH as a two-year package of $55,000, with concentrations in behavioral science and health equity, biostatistics, epidemiology, health management and policy, and an online public health practice track.
  • The University of Missouri offers a veterinary public health concentration alongside health promotion and policy, and applies through SOPHAS.
  • Missouri State University in Springfield runs its MPH seated, online or hybrid, typically over 2 to 2.5 years, with no GRE requirement.

What You’ll Pay as a Resident or Non-Resident

Because most of Missouri’s programs are private, the resident discount matters less here than in many states. The clearest public deal is Mizzou’s online Health Promotion and Policy MPH: online students pay online tuition regardless of residency, $653.00 per credit hour in 2026-27, for an estimated $27,426.00 over 42 credit hours before books and fees. That’s the same price whether you live in Kansas City or out of state.

Compare SLU’s package price against WashU’s per-credit rate by total cost, and run any of them through the MPH cost and loan calculator.

Which Missouri Program Fits You

If you want research depth and a large alumni network in St. Louis, WashU or SLU is the fit. If you work full time anywhere in the state, A.T. Still’s online MPH, Mizzou online or Missouri State’s hybrid format keep you in your job. If your career is in oral health, A.T. Still’s dental emphasis is the specialized option. For accredited online options based elsewhere, see the online MPH programs page, and check public health salaries before you commit to a price.
