Who Hires Public Health Graduates in Kansas

Kansas puts health and the environment in one agency: the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Its Division of Public Health sits beside a Division of Environment, which runs the bureaus of air, water, waste management and environmental remediation, and a Division of Health Care Finance. For an MPH graduate, that means environmental health work in Kansas is state health department work, not a separate agency.

Locally, health departments cover all 105 Kansas counties and coordinate through 15 public health preparedness regions.

Kansas also has a federal lab no other state has. The USDA’s National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan is the first U.S. lab with BSL-4 containment that can house large livestock. It is taking over the animal disease mission of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, and it sits next to Kansas State University’s Biosecurity Research Institute. If zoonotic disease or food security is your interest, few places concentrate that work like Manhattan.

The job numbers point the same way. Kansas has about 70 epidemiologist jobs but 1,350 environmental and occupational health specialists earning a median $86,300, and 5,120 health services managers at a median $111,030. See the environmental health specialist career guide.

KU or K-State: Two Very Different MPHs

Both Kansas programs are CEPH accredited and public, but they train for different careers.

University of Kansas: Epidemiology, Practice or Online

The KU-MPH is run by KU Medical Center, not the Lawrence campus, with students in Kansas City and Wichita. It has been accredited since 1998 and was recently reaccredited through December 31, 2032. You choose from Epidemiology, Public Health Practice or the online Generalist concentration across 42 credit hours, finishing with an internship and a 192-hour capstone. Full time takes two years; part time takes at least three. You apply through SOPHAS.

Pick KU if you want a medical-center setting, a Kansas City or Wichita campus, or a fully online option. KU also runs a Master of Science in Biostatistics, 36 credit hours on the Kansas City campus, if you’d rather go deep on data.

Kansas State University: Food Safety and Zoonoses

Kansas State builds its 42-credit MPH from partnering departments, so your emphasis decides where and how you study: Food Safety and Biosecurity, Infectious Diseases and Zoonoses, or Public Health Nutrition and Physical Activity. Many courses are online, but not every area can be finished online. K-State also offers a joint DVM/MPH for veterinarians and veterinary students.

K-State suits you if your interest is the animal-human-food connection that the Manhattan labs work on. Its CEPH accreditation runs through December 31, 2026 and it is under review for reaccreditation, with CEPH taking public comments until October 12, 2026. Check the outcome on the CEPH accreditation guide before you enroll.

What Residency Is Worth at KU

For 2026-27, KU Medical Center charges MPH students $485.50 per credit hour if they are Kansas residents and $1,141.00 if they are not, on either the Kansas City or Wichita campus. Campus fees add $446.91 in fall and spring.

Online study changes the math for non-residents. The online rate is $485.50 per credit hour for everyone, with a $100 per credit e-learning fee and a lower campus fee of $187.49. If you live outside Kansas and the Generalist concentration fits your goals, online is the lower-cost route.

KU-MPH also offers two graduate research assistantships a year. Each is a half-time position of 20 hours a week, and it comes with a non-resident fee waiver, so assistants pay in-state tuition. The MPH scholarships guide lists other funding.

If neither Kansas program fits, compare online MPH programs open to Kansas residents, or look at epidemiology programs nationwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kansas State's MPH Still Accredited?

Yes. K-State's MPH is fully accredited by CEPH through December 31, 2026 and is under review for reaccreditation. CEPH is taking third-party comments on the program until October 12, 2026.
