Which MPH Nutrition Programs Are Worth Comparing?

An MPH nutrition program trains you to improve how whole populations eat, and this set holds 43 public health nutrition programs at 35 schools, 39 of them MPH degrees. Estimated tuition runs from $12,915 at UTHealth Houston (Texas resident rate) to $115,322 at NYU, with a median of $41,790. If you want to become a registered dietitian, pick one of the programs with built-in supervised practice, because a graduate degree has been required for the RDN exam since January 1, 2024.

Public health nutrition sits between two careers. One is the registered dietitian who counsels patients. The other is the nutrition program leader who runs food access projects, community nutrition education or nutrition policy for a whole city or state. An MPH nutrition program can prepare you for the second, and some can prepare you for both.

What Is a Public Health Nutritionist?

A public health nutritionist works on how a population eats rather than on one patient’s diet. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes community dietitians as developing public health programs and counseling groups on nutrition, working in clinics, government agencies and nonprofits. That’s the core of the job: plan a program, deliver it to a community and measure whether it changed anything.

The title itself isn’t a protected credential. “Registered dietitian nutritionist” is. Many states license dietitians, and some public health nutrition jobs ask for the RDN. So the first question for any masters in public health nutrition is whether it leads to RDN eligibility or not.

MPH Nutrition Programs in Numbers

This set holds 43 programs at 35 schools in 24 states: 39 MPH degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 MSPH. Nearly all are at accredited schools: 37 sit at CEPH-accredited schools or programs. You have real format choice, with 25 programs offered online, 27 on campus and 7 hybrid.

Nutrition is often a concentration inside a general MPH rather than its own degree. In the concentration names across this set, “Nutrition” appears 11 times and “Public Health Nutrition” 7 times, alongside names like Nutrition and Dietetics, Food, Nutrition and Population Health, and Nutrition, Food Systems and Health.

Two Kinds of MPH Nutrition Programs: RDN Track or Population Track

Since January 1, 2024, you need a graduate degree to become eligible for the registered dietitian exam for the first time. The Commission on Dietetic Registration also requires ACEND-accredited coursework and ACEND-accredited supervised practice. An MPH alone covers only the degree. So programs fall into two groups.

RDN-track programs build the dietetics training in. These are the ones in this set that do:

Program How the RDN training works Length or credits
University of Minnesota Public Health Nutrition MPH Coordinated Program track adds 1,000 hours of ACEND supervised practice 50 to 56 credits (42 on the Traditional track)
Northern Arizona University MPH Nutrition ACEND-accredited graduate program; rotations in clinical, foodservice and public health 24 months, residential in Flagstaff
University of Michigan MPH in Nutritional Sciences Dietetics subplan with 1,000+ hours of supervised experiential learning 60 credit hours, 2 years
Loma Linda University Nutrition MPH Coordinated Program in Public Health Nutrition and Dietetics 57 quarter units plus 19 of corequisites, 2.33 years
UT Chattanooga MPH Nutrition and Dietetics ACEND and CEPH accredited; graduates get a verification statement for the RDN exam Graduate program in nutrition and dietetics

Two more offer a partial route. CUNY’s MPH in Public Health Nutrition isn’t a didactic dietetics program, but applicants who already finished an ACEND-accredited DPD with a 3.0 GPA can be considered for the dietetic internship inside the MPH. UTHealth Houston lists a Health Promotion/Health Education concentration with a Dietetic Internship option.

Population-track programs skip the clinical training and go deeper into policy, food systems and epidemiology. UNC’s online MPH offers Nutrition, Food Systems and Health; Tufts, whose MPH runs on campus, online or hybrid, lists a Nutrition concentration. These suit you if you already hold the RDN, or if you want to manage programs or shape policy rather than counsel patients.

How to Become a Public Health Nutritionist

  1. Pick your end point. If jobs you want list “RDN required,” you need the dietetics pathway. If they list “MPH preferred,” a population-track program is enough.
  2. Check your prerequisites. RDN-track programs expect science coursework. NAU tells applicants its course plan must be taken in full regardless of undergraduate work.
  3. Finish the graduate degree with supervised practice. Either in a coordinated or graduate program like the ones above, or a separate ACEND dietetic internship.
  4. Pass the CDR registration exam, then apply for your state license where one exists.
  5. Build public health experience. Every MPH includes applied practice work. CEPH requires at least two practical work products from that placement, useful proof for a health department hiring manager.

What You Study in a Public Health Nutrition MPH

The coursework is a public health core plus a nutrition layer. The core covers the CEPH foundations every MPH shares: epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, program planning and communication. The nutrition layer is where programs differ.

CUNY’s required nutrition courses give a clear picture of a population-track curriculum: Community Nutrition Education, Food and Nutrition through the Lifecycle, Food Policy, Nutrient Metabolism and Applications in Public Health, and Nutritional Epidemiology. Minnesota’s program centers on food access, community nutrition interventions, health disparities and nutrition policy, and lets you specialize in maternal and child nutrition, nutrition epidemiology, nutrition policy or obesity prevention.

RDN-track programs add clinical and food service training on top. NAU’s final six months are rotations in clinical nutrition, foodservice management and public health, with placements up to an hour’s drive from Flagstaff. If you don’t want hospital rotations, a population track will fit better.

MPH Nutrition Online: What Is Actually Remote

Of the 43 programs, 25 offer an online format and 11 are online only. The catch is supervised practice. Dietetic rotations happen in hospitals, kitchens and clinics, so RDN-track programs usually have an in-person component. NAU’s program is residential, with only a few courses and rotation-term classes online.

Population-track programs travel better. These online options publish full pricing:

What a Masters in Public Health Nutrition Costs

Per-credit tuition across the 21 programs that publish it runs from $287 to $2,507, with a median of $995. The middle half of programs charge between $610 and $1,268 a credit. Several of the best-known nutrition programs sit at private schools, which pulls the upper end up fast.

Program Estimated tuition Credits
UTHealth Houston MPH $12,915 (Texas residents) 45
USF online MPH $22,050 42
Liberty University online MPH $25,200 42
Tulane MSPH in Nutrition $82,845 45
Tufts MPH $85,680 42
NYU MPH in Public Health Nutrition $115,322 46

Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times credits, before fees. Tulane charges a flat $1,841 a credit with no in-state discount, plus a $100 per-credit academic support fee. If price is your main filter, the affordable MPH programs page ranks every concentration by cost.

MPH, MSPH or MS in Nutrition?

The MPH is the practice degree: CEPH requires at least 42 semester credits, foundational public health competencies and applied practice. An MS in nutrition is usually a research degree. Michigan’s MS in Nutritional Sciences lists 32 to 34 credit hours, with options that include Independent Nutrition Research. The MSPH can go either way; CEPH notes that some schools treat it as equal to the MPH and others as an academic degree. Tulane’s MSPH in Nutrition, for example, lists 45 credit hours and about 24 months, the same scale as an MPH.

If you’re weighing the research route, the MPH vs MS guide lays out the trade-offs.

What the Job Market Looks Like

The BLS projects dietitian and nutritionist jobs to grow 8% from 2025 to 2035, with about 5,700 openings a year, and reports a 2025 median of $76,400. Government employs 11% of dietitians and nutritionists, which is where most public health nutrition roles sit. Hospitals employ the most, at 27%, which is another reason the RDN matters: it keeps both doors open.

Nutrition work overlaps with maternal and infant programs, so compare maternal and child health MPH programs if that’s your focus, and check CEPH accreditation for every school on your list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Become a Dietitian With an MPH in Nutrition?

Only if the program includes, or you add, ACEND-accredited coursework and supervised practice.
