What Is an Executive MPH, and Which Hybrid and Part-Time MPH Programs Fit a Full-Time Job?

An executive MPH is a Master of Public Health built for people already working in health, with classes packed into evenings, weekends or short campus sessions. This site lists 144 hybrid and executive MPH programs at 105 schools, and 130 of them are at CEPH-accredited schools. Schedules range from one evening a week at the University of San Francisco to Friday and Saturday classes in UCLA's Executive MPH.

An executive MPH is a Master of Public Health designed around a working adult’s calendar. It’s the same degree, with the same CEPH-required core, but the classes move to evenings, weekends or a few intensive sessions a year, and some programs only admit people who already have health experience. Hybrid MPH programs are the broader group: part of the work happens online and part in a classroom.

This site lists 144 hybrid and executive MPH programs at 105 schools in 39 states. The formats overlap, so read the counts as “programs that offer this format”: 77 run a hybrid version, 82 have an online version and 69 an on-campus version. 84 are at public universities and 57 at private nonprofits.

Executive MPH Programs: Who Gets in

What makes an MPH “executive” is usually the admissions gate, not the coursework. Three examples show the range:

Southern Connecticut State University’s MPH takes a different approach: it offers an Executive M.P.H. concentration in Management and Leadership alongside Health Promotion, in online and campus formats.

Program facts come from each school's own program pages, reviewed September 2026. Tuition is the school's published figure with its basis; per-credit sorting uses programs that publish a per-credit rate. CEPH status comes from the CEPH accredited list.

Hybrid MPH Class Schedules Compared

The word “hybrid” covers very different weekly commitments. These are the published schedules for hybrid and part-time-friendly MPH programs:

Program Schedule Length Tuition as published
University of San Francisco MPH One evening a week, alternating in person and online 2 years (five semesters) $1,555 per unit
Sacramento State MPH Two evenings of in-person classes a week Two years $730 per unit (Fall 2026 cohort)
Cal State San Marcos MPH 8-week courses, two evenings a week, including summer 16 months $650 per unit (fall 2026)
San Francisco State MPH Hybrid, fall cohort only 2 years (5 semesters) $5,267 per semester for California residents, Fall 2026
SUNY Downstate MPH Mostly weekday evening courses, full or part time One to six years $471 per credit part time (New York residents)
San Jose State MPH (online format) Online, with a cohort meeting once a year for 4 to 5 days in San Jose 24 months $868 per unit (Fall 2027)
Hawaii Pacific University MPH Online or hybrid, 2 to 3 courses per 8-week term 12 months (fall entry) or 16 months (spring entry) $1,483 per credit

Two patterns stand out. California’s state universities dominate the evening-cohort model, and their per-unit prices ($650 and $730) sit below the private University of San Francisco’s $1,555 for a similar evening schedule. And “once a year” programs like San Jose State behave more like online programs with a short residency than true hybrids.

Part-Time MPH Programs: How Long They Really Take

Part-time study stretches the calendar by one to two years. UConn lists 2 years full time and 4 years part time. The University of North Florida MPH lists 2 and 3. Kansas says at least three years part time. Emory’s Online Part-Time MPH lets you take 3 to 7 credit hours a semester, with a five-year limit, at $2,060 per credit. The Johns Hopkins part-time/online MPH typically takes 2 to 3 years and allows up to 4.

Two money rules follow from going part time. You must be enrolled at least half-time to get federal Direct Loans. And for new borrowers from July 1, 2026, the annual limit of $20,500 is adjusted downward when you’re enrolled less than full time. The MPH scholarships and funding guide covers the other options, and how long an MPH takes lays out every timeline.

What Hybrid and Executive MPH Programs Cost

Across the 68 programs in this group that publish a per-credit rate, the median is $992, with the middle half between $620 and $1,483. Estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees) has a median of $44,940 across 67 programs. The lowest:

Program Format Estimated tuition
UPR Medical Sciences MPH, Gerontology Evening hybrid $11,890
UTHealth Houston MPH Campus, hybrid or online (Texas resident rate) $12,915
SUNY Downstate MPH Campus or online, evenings (New York resident part-time rate) $19,782
Augusta University MPH Online (in-state rate) $20,025
University of Kansas MPH Campus, hybrid or online (in-state rate) $20,391

If your employer helps, the tax rules are on your side. An employer can exclude up to $5,250 a year of educational assistance from your wages, graduate courses count, and that exclusion is now permanent. Over a three- or four-year part-time MPH, that adds up.

Who Executive and Hybrid Formats Suit

These formats suit people moving up inside health organizations. The BLS says medical and health services managers typically start with a bachelor’s degree and some related work experience, and that advancement to top executive positions may require a master’s degree. The median for those managers was $123,860 in May 2025, and the BLS projects employment to grow 24 percent from 2025 to 2035. An MPH aimed at management, such as health policy and management, fits that path; if pure administration is the goal, compare MPH vs MHA.

The CEPH core also covers the management side. Every MPH student is assessed on applying leadership and management principles, negotiation and mediation, and budget and resource management.

The Practicum When You Already Work in Health

CEPH’s rules give working students room. The applied practice experience can be spread across your enrollment instead of done in one block, and it can be course-based, done in government, nonprofit or for-profit settings. What it can’t be is a reflection paper: you need at least two practical work products made for the organization’s use, showing at least five competencies. Programs decide whether your current employer can host it, so check the handbook before you enroll.

Applying to a Hybrid or Executive MPH

Test scores rarely stand in the way. Among the 144 programs here, 63 say the GRE isn’t required, 14 make it optional and 6 let you waive it. Application routes split between SOPHAS (73 programs) and the school’s own portal (53). Executive programs usually ask for a resume that shows the required years of experience, so have dates, titles and responsibilities ready. The MPH admission requirements guide covers statements and letters.

Concentrations follow the same pattern as the field as a whole. Epidemiology is the most common concentration name in this group (33 programs), followed by Global Health (12) and Biostatistics (9). Management-flavored options such as Healthcare Management, Health Management and Policy, and Public Health Practice appear too, and they line up with the management path described below.

How to Choose a Hybrid or Executive MPH

  • Count your evenings. One night a week (San Francisco) and two nights a week (Sacramento, San Marcos) are very different commitments.
  • Price the part-time path. At per-credit schools, tuition is the same at any pace; flat per-semester schools can cost more when you stretch out.
  • Check the experience gate. Executive programs like UCLA’s weekend MPH want years of full-time work before you apply.
  • Confirm CEPH status. 130 of the 144 programs here are at CEPH-accredited schools.
  • Line up employer support first. Get tuition assistance approved before the first term.

If you don’t need any campus time, compare online MPH programs. If you can go full time for a year, look at accelerated MPH programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Difference Between an Executive MPH and a Regular MPH?

The degree and its CEPH requirements are the same. An executive MPH changes who gets in and when you meet: UCLA's MPH for Health Professionals requires at least 3 years of full-time work experience and meets on weekends, and Yale's Advanced Professional MPH takes applicants with a doctoral degree, a master's plus 2 years of experience, or a bachelor's plus 5 years.

Can I Get Financial Aid for a Part-Time MPH?

Yes, as long as you're enrolled at least half-time, which is the minimum for federal Direct Loans. Below full time, your annual loan limit is adjusted to your enrollment, so a light course load means a smaller loan than the $20,500 full-time limit.

Will My Employer Pay for an Executive MPH?

Some employers do, and the tax rules favor it. An employer can exclude up to $5,250 a year of educational assistance from your wages, graduate courses included, and that exclusion is now permanent.

How Long Does a Part-Time MPH Take?

Usually three to four years. UConn lists 4 years part time, the University of North Florida 3 years, and Kansas at least three years. Emory's online part-time MPH lets you take 3 to 7 credit hours a semester within a five-year limit.
