The SOPHAS Application: Fees, Deadlines and How It Works

SOPHAS is the centralized application for public health graduate programs, run through the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). You create one account, fill out your background once, and send it to as many participating programs as you like. ASPPH lists more than 120 institutions and more than 3,500 public health programs on the system.

It’s the main route into an MPH, but not the only one. Of the 488 MPH programs on this site, 243 take applications through SOPHAS, 208 use the school’s own portal, and 37 don’t say which. So the first step is to check how each program on your list wants to hear from you.

What the SOPHAS Application Is and Who Uses It

Think of SOPHAS as the Common App for public health graduate school. The application has four parts: Personal Information, Academic History, Supporting Information (recommendations, experiences and documents) and Program Materials.

A single SOPHAS application doesn’t mean every program gets the same packet. The Program Materials section holds each program’s own requirements and deadline, so budget time for those.

How Much the SOPHAS Application Fee Costs

You pay $155 for the first program and $65 for each program you add. Applying to four programs, for example, means one $155 fee plus three $65 fees, so pick your list before you pay.

Getting a SOPHAS Application Fee Waiver

SOPHAS offers a limited number of fee waivers, first come, first served. You can qualify in one of two ways:

• Financial: your household income falls below the set thresholds.
• Service or international: you’ve served with an eligible organization, or you’re a citizen of a country on the UN list of Least Developed Countries.

Three rules catch people out. You must ask for the waiver before you submit. It covers only the $155 first-program fee, not the $65 add-ons. And once it’s approved you have 14 days, weekends and holidays included, to submit, with no extensions. A decision takes up to 10 business days, so apply for the waiver well before your first deadline.

When the SOPHAS Application Opens and Closes

The 2026-2027 cycle opened on August 12, 2026, and closes on August 2, 2027 at 11:59 PM Eastern. That long window is misleading, though. Each program sets its own deadline, and most fall well before summer. The dates below are the last possible ones for the whole system:

SOPHAS suggests working backward from each program’s deadline: request transcripts 10 to 12 weeks ahead, submit 6 to 8 weeks ahead, and keep checking your status from 4 to 6 weeks out. If you’re aiming at fall 2027 entry, that means ordering transcripts this fall.

Transcripts, Transcript Entry and Verification

This is the slowest part of the SOPHAS application portal, and where most delays start.

Transcript entry. You type every U.S. and English-Canadian course you’ve taken into the Transcript Entry section, exactly as it appears on your transcript. Foreign coursework is not entered.

Official transcripts. You must also have official copies sent to SOPHAS. It takes electronic transcripts only from Parchment and National Student Clearinghouse, or paper copies mailed by your registrar. Include the Transcript ID Form (or have the registrar print your SOPHAS ID) so the document gets matched to you. Unofficial copies, student-issued copies and anything addressed to someone else get rejected. Once SOPHAS receives a transcript, it can take up to five business days to post.

Foreign transcripts. Don’t send them to SOPHAS; they’ll be discarded. Order a course-by-course U.S. equivalency report from World Education Services (WES) and have WES send it directly.

How Long SOPHAS Verification Takes

Once everything required has arrived, your status changes to Complete and you join the verification queue. Verification checks your entered courses against your transcripts, convert grades, calculate your GPAs and confirm your degrees. Verification runs in the order applications come in and can take up to 10 business days. That’s why submitting early matters: in a busy month, the queue grows.

Recommendations: How Many and When

You need to request at least 3 recommendations and can request up to 5. Some programs need only 2 of them completed, others need 3. When you add a recommender, SOPHAS emails them right away, and they upload the letter through the Liaison Letters portal. You choose a requested completion date, and it should fall before your earliest program deadline.

Can You Submit Before Your Recommendations Arrive?

Yes. SOPHAS lets you submit before your transcripts, recommendations or official test scores are received. Submitting early gets your application into the queue sooner. Just remember that verification can’t finish until the required items arrive.

Checking Your SOPHAS Application Status

After you submit, the SOPHAS application portal becomes your tracker. Your status stays short of Complete until every required item has arrived: official transcripts, any required test scores and the recommendations your programs need. Once it flips to Complete, you move into the verification queue, and verification can take up to 10 business days.

Put the timeline together and the math is simple. Transcripts can take up to five business days to post after SOPHAS receives them, and verification can take up to 10 more. If a program’s deadline requires a verified application, submitting the night before won’t work. Aim for the 6 to 8 weeks SOPHAS recommends, and treat a stalled status as a prompt to chase the missing piece, not to wait.

Tips for a Smoother Application

• Check GRE rules per program. Most MPH programs on this site don’t ask for the GRE: 187 say it isn’t required and 59 list it as optional. See the no-GRE MPH programs if you’d rather skip it.
• Decide on format early. Online programs often run on different start dates. Compare the online MPH programs before you pay for extra SOPHAS designations.
• Keep your CAS ID handy. SOPHAS customer service asks for it first. The in-application chat is the quickest way to reach the SOPHAS help center staff.
• Watch your status. Log in weekly after you submit to catch missing transcripts or a recommender who hasn’t responded.
• Double-check accreditation. Using SOPHAS doesn’t by itself tell you a program is CEPH-accredited. The CEPH accreditation guide explains how.

No. SOPHAS rejects transcripts that are unofficial, marked student-issued, or addressed to anyone other than SOPHAS. Send official copies from your registrar, electronically through Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse, or by mail.

Do I Need SOPHAS for Every MPH Program?
