The Lowest and Highest Informatics Tuition

Nine programs publish both a per-credit rate and a credit total, and their estimated tuition runs from $18,330 to $90,000 with a median of $26,880. Estimated tuition below is the published per-credit rate times credits, before fees:

The standout for out-of-state students is IU’s online MPH. Its out-of-state online rate is $652.33 a credit, close to the $605.25 in-state rate, while Augusta’s out-of-state rate jumps to $1,249. If you live outside Georgia or New York, run your own residency rate before you trust the headline number.

Informatics Hiding Under Other Names

Only a handful of programs use the plain words “health informatics.” Search this set by concentration name and you’ll find Health Informatics (3 programs), Public Health Informatics (3), Public Health Technology (2) and Biomedical Informatics (2). Others fold informatics into a broader data track:

• Applied Analytics, Informatics and AI at CU Anschutz, formerly called Applied Biostatistics, offered on campus and online.
• Population Health Informatics inside the University of Nebraska Medical Center MPH, available online or on campus.
• Health Informatics in Bay Path University’s online MPH, an accelerated 8-week format that isn’t on the CEPH list.
• Health Technology and Data Analytics in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign MS in Community Health.
• Modeling and Informatics in Georgetown’s MS in Global Infectious Disease, an 18-month campus program.

Health Informatics in the USA Without the GRE

Six programs in this set say the GRE isn’t required, and 3 list it as optional. The no-GRE group includes both CU Anschutz MPH formats, George Washington’s MPH@GW, Georgia Southern’s MPH (with a fully online Public Health Informatics concentration) and Buffalo’s MS. Is Health Informatics a STEM Degree?

It depends on the program’s CIP code, not its name. The Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program List decides which fields qualify international graduates for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. The list, last updated July 22, 2024, includes Medical Informatics (CIP 51.2706), Biostatistics (26.1102) and Epidemiology (26.1309).

So an informatics MS coded as Medical Informatics qualifies, while an MPH coded under a general public health code may not, even with an informatics concentration. If you’re an international student, get the program’s CIP code from admissions in writing and check it against the list. The DHS list doesn’t include Public Health, General (CIP 51.2201), so the code matters more than the concentration title.

Pay: What the Federal Data Shows

The closest federal job category is health information technologists and medical registrars, the people who, in the BLS description, advise organizations on computerized healthcare systems and analyze clinical data.

About 38,100 people work in this category. The spread is wide, which reflects the gap between records-focused roles and analytics or systems roles. What Your Informatics Practicum Can Produce

Every CEPH-accredited MPH ends in two practical pieces: an applied practice experience and an integrative learning experience. For informatics students, the practice rules are unusually friendly. CEPH counts spreadsheets, websites, surveys, presentations and “other digital artifacts of learning” as valid work products, as long as they were made for the host organization’s use. You need at least two of them.

That means your practicum can leave you with a working data dashboard or a cleaned registry file for a health department, the kind of portfolio piece an informatics hiring manager can actually open. Programs build this in differently. IU’s online MPH sets aside 5 credits for practice experience courses and 1 credit tied to the Certified in Public Health exam. Augusta’s online MPH requires a two-credit internship plus a capstone. CU Anschutz requires a practicum and a capstone in both its campus and online formats.

When you compare programs, ask what past informatics students built during their placements and where they did the work. A placement inside a health department’s data team will teach you more than a general office internship.

Choosing Among the Online Options

• Accreditation. 15 of the 20 programs sit at CEPH-accredited schools. Purdue Global’s MPH isn’t on the CEPH list, which matters for jobs that require a CEPH-accredited degree. See the CEPH accreditation guide.
