What Do You Need to Get Into an MPH Program?
Most MPH prerequisites come down to a bachelor's degree in any field, a solid GPA (UC Davis, for example, asks for a 3.0), a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and a resume, with a few programs also asking for intro courses in math, biology or social science. The GRE is rarely required: only 3 MPH programs on this site require it, while 187 say it isn't needed. Start with MPH programs with no GRE.
MPH admission asks for less than many applicants expect. You don’t need a public health degree, few programs require the GRE, and work experience counts. What schools want is evidence you can handle the coursework and a clear reason you want to work in public health.
This guide walks through each requirement in the order you’ll meet it, using real admissions pages from UC Davis and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the GRE and application counts for the 488 MPH programs on this site.

A Bachelor’s Degree and Your GPA
Every MPH program expects a bachelor’s degree, and it doesn’t need to be in public health. UAB, for example, welcomes students from any major into its fast-track MPH.
GPA is where programs set a line. UC Davis asks for a cumulative 3.0 from an accredited school, and the degree has to be conferred before the program starts in August. If your GPA is below a program’s line, recent coursework can help: UC Davis says it considers relevant courses taken after your bachelor’s degree.
MPH Prerequisites: Which Courses You Need
Prerequisites vary by program. UAB’s catalog states there are no course prerequisites for admission to its fast-track MPH. Others set a short list. UC Davis, for example, wants a grade of B or higher in one introductory course in each of these areas:
- mathematics, such as statistics
- biological sciences
- social sciences, such as psychology, anthropology, economics or sociology
- introduction to public health
You can still be finishing them when you apply, as long as they’re done by June 30 before you start, so a missing course doesn’t have to delay your application.
Quantitative readiness matters even where there’s no formal prerequisite. UC Davis asks applicants to describe their experience with statistics or statistical software, because it wants to know you’re ready for the math in the core courses.
Do You Need the GRE for an MPH?
Almost never. Here’s how the 488 MPH programs on this site handle it:

The three that require it are the Howard University generalist MPH, the Bethune-Cookman University MPH in Health Equity, and the University of Pittsburgh’s Multidisciplinary MPH for doctoral-level clinicians. Your MPH Personal Statement and Letters
The statement is where you make your case in your own words.
UC Davis asks for two statements, each up to 4,000 characters, and its prompts show what admissions committees look for:
- Statement of purpose. What in your background (personal, professional or academic) led you to public health, what your career goals are, and why this program fits them.
- Personal history statement. Experiences or circumstances outside your direct path to public health that still shape you as an applicant, such as your family, culture, economic background, challenges or community service.
Rather than copying an MPH personal statement example, answer those questions with specifics from your own work. Name the problem you want to work on and the skills you want to build.
For letters of recommendation, UC Davis asks for three and recommends at least one from someone who knows your academic ability. If you haven’t taken statistics recently, it suggests a letter from someone who can speak to your data analysis work.
Work and Volunteer Experience
Experience isn’t always required, but it strengthens your application. UC Davis asks applicants to show interest in public health through work or volunteer experience, an undergraduate research paper, AmeriCorps or similar service. A CV or resume is part of the file.
For working adults, this can be the strongest part of the application. Frame your current job in public health terms: the populations you serve, the data you handle, the programs you’ve helped run.
MPH Application Deadlines and Timing
Deadlines vary widely, so build your calendar around the programs on your list.
- UC Davis lists December 1 as its priority deadline (the one to meet if you want to be considered for its internal fellowships), January 15 as its general deadline, and June 1 for space-available review. Transcripts, letters and English test scores are due by February 14 for the earlier rounds. Every student starts in August.
- UAB lists July 1 for domestic fall applicants and April 1 for international applicants, November 1 for spring, and April 1 for summer, with some departments setting their own final dates.
- SOPHAS was open for the 2026-2027 cycle when checked in September 2026, and each participating program sets its own deadline inside that cycle.
A practical rule: ask your recommenders at least a month before your earliest deadline, and treat the priority date as your real deadline if you need funding. Scholarship timing is covered in the MPH scholarships guide.
Start dates differ too. Some accelerated MPH programs start several times a year; Claremont Graduate University’s accelerated online MPH, for example, lists six start dates a year.
SOPHAS vs Applying Directly
You’ll apply one of two ways. Of the 488 MPH programs here, 243 use SOPHAS, 208 take applications directly, and 37 don’t say.
SOPHAS is the centralized application run by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health. One application goes to many participating programs, but each program still sets its own requirements. In the 2026-27 cycle, SOPHAS costs $155 for the first program and $65 for each additional one. Direct applications go to the school’s own graduate office. UC Davis is CEPH-accredited but skips SOPHAS: you submit one application through its Office of Graduate Studies.
