The cheapest MPH programs online that are also CEPH-accredited charge $650 or less per credit: Georgia State ($464, fully online), the University of Alabama ($480), Alaska Anchorage ($549 for residents), San Diego State ($629) and UAB ($624 online). Georgia State is the standout for out-of-state online students: its $464 rate doesn’t change with residency. Alaska Anchorage is the opposite case: $549 per credit for Alaskans and $1,173 for everyone else.

What California MPH Programs Charge

California programs draw a lot of cost searches, and the spread inside one state shows how much the school type matters. CSUN’s online MPH in Community Health Education charges $857 per unit for its fall 2027 cohort, over 42 units and 2.5 years. San Diego State’s online MPH is $629 per unit over 51 units. Cal State San Marcos is $650 per unit. UC San Diego charges $1,149 per unit, or $723 effective for California residents after its resident fellowship, and Berkeley’s online MPH lists $1,629 per unit. The private University of Southern California online MPH is $2,539 per unit.

Why the per-Credit Rate Isn’t the Total Cost

Credits vary more than you’d think. CEPH sets a floor of 42 semester credits, and most programs sit at 42 to 45. But Rasmussen’s MPH is 56 credits and San Diego State’s online MPH is 51 units, so a low rate can still produce a middling total.

Fees add up. Georgia State charges $660 a semester on top of tuition for online students. Arizona Global Campus adds $145 per course. Claremont adds a $245 student fee and a $150 technology fee every semester. Cal Baptist lists $773 per unit “plus fees.”

Residency moves the price most. Oklahoma State goes from $244.90 to $921.50 per credit for non-residents. UAB’s campus rate goes from $526 to $1,284. In the West, the Western Regional Graduate Program lets students from WICHE’s 16 member states and territories pay up to 150 percent of resident tuition at participating public universities’ graduate programs.

Aid can cut the top end. University of Miami lists $2,644 per credit, among the highest here, but also lists up to $60,000 in tuition waiver support for incoming MPH students. UC San Diego charges $1,149 per unit, or an effective $723 for California residents after its resident fellowship. Some private programs publish a base program cost instead: Azusa Pacific lists $29,885 to $31,275.

Cheap vs CEPH-Accredited: The Real Trade-Off

The lowest prices in this set belong to schools CEPH doesn’t accredit for the MPH: Rasmussen, Arizona Global Campus and Everglades University aren’t on CEPH’s accredited list, and Oklahoma State’s accreditation covers its bachelor’s program. Everglades’ 36-credit Master’s in Public Health Administration is also below the 42-credit minimum CEPH sets for an MPH.

Here’s what you give up. The US Public Health Service, some military public health jobs and some state and local health agencies only hire MPH graduates from CEPH-accredited schools and programs. CEPH study is also a route to the CPH certification exam. If your goal is a government epidemiology or health department job, pay the difference. 179 of the 213 programs on this page are at CEPH-accredited schools, and several cost less than $650 per credit. Paying for an MPH Without Overpaying

Federal loans are capped. From July 1, 2026, new graduate borrowers can take up to $20,500 a year and $100,000 in total in Direct Unsubsidized Loans. The fixed rate is 8.07% for loans first disbursed from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, with a 1.057% loan fee. Grad PLUS loans are gone for new borrowers, so a cheaper program is now easier to finance with federal loans alone.

Public service can erase the balance. Public Service Loan Forgiveness cancels your remaining Direct Loan balance after 120 qualifying monthly payments while you work full time for a government agency or a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Government is where much of public health works: state government (33%) and local government (22%) are the two largest employers of epidemiologists.

Your employer can pay tax-free. Employers can give you up to $5,250 a year in educational assistance without it counting as wages, and that includes graduate courses and student loan payments.

Cheapest One-Year and Accelerated MPH Options

Several affordable programs are also fast. West Coast University runs its online MPH in as little as 16 months at $608 per credit, plus a $2,000 technology fee on that track. Cal State San Marcos runs a 16-month cohort at $650 per unit in hybrid or online format. Sacred Heart offers a one-year full-time track at $750 per credit. How to Compare MPH Costs Before You Apply

  • Build the total yourself. Rate times credits, plus every per-semester and per-course fee, at the residency rate you’ll actually pay.
  • Check the CEPH list. A cheap program that isn’t CEPH-accredited can cost you jobs later.
  • Count semesters for flat-rate schools. Per-semester pricing only compares once you multiply it out.
  • Look for waivers and resident fellowships. Miami and UC San Diego show how much they can move the price.
  • Plan the loan math. At $20,500 a year, a two-year program lets you borrow more in total than a one-year program.

Oklahoma State's MPH comes out lower at $10,286, but CEPH's accreditation at Oklahoma State covers its bachelor's program, not the MPH.
