CEPH Accreditation: What It Means for Your MPH
What Is CEPH Accreditation, and Do You Need It?
CEPH accreditation is the specialized review that public health schools and programs go through with the Council on Education for Public Health, the only public health accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For most MPH students it matters: some public health jobs require a degree from a CEPH-accredited unit, and it is the most direct path to the CPH exam. CEPH accreditation tells you that an outside body has reviewed a public health school or program against a published set of standards, and that it passed. The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) is an independent agency, set up in 1974, and it is the only accreditor for public health that the U.S. Department of Education recognizes.
If you’re choosing an MPH, it’s the first filter to apply. This guide covers what CEPH checks, how a “school” differs from a “program,” what probation and applicant status mean for you, and how to look up any school in a couple of minutes.
What CEPH Accreditation Covers
CEPH doesn’t just read a course list. Its review covers the whole unit: resources, faculty qualifications and student services, with outside peer evaluators visiting to check the work.
For the MPH, CEPH’s 2024 criteria set specific requirements every accredited program has to meet:
- Foundational competencies. Every MPH student has to be assessed on each of CEPH’s foundational competencies at least once, through an assignment, paper, presentation or test.
- Applied practice experience. Every student completes practice work (a practicum, internship, course-based project or service work) that shows at least five competencies, three of them foundational.
- Integrative learning experience. A culminating project, such as a capstone course or practice-based project, that ends in a substantial written product.
- Concentration depth. A named concentration typically needs at least 9 of 42 semester credits in courses built for that area.
That’s why accredited MPH programs look similar in structure. The middle half of MPH programs on this site require 42 to 45 credits, which you can compare in how long an MPH takes.
Schools of Public Health vs Public Health Programs
CEPH accredits in three categories: schools of public health, public health programs, and standalone bachelor’s programs. For an MPH student, the first two matter.

The label is about structure, not quality. A program-level MPH carries the same accreditation as one at a school of public health. A school usually just gives you more concentrations and more degree types to switch into, such as the MSPH and MS degrees compared in MPH vs MS vs MSPH.
Is CEPH Accreditation Important?
For most MPH students, yes. CEPH names three practical reasons:
- Some jobs require it. The U.S. Public Health Service, some U.S. military public health jobs and some state and local government agencies require MPH-level jobs to be filled by graduates of CEPH-accredited schools and programs.
- Some fellowships require it. Certain fellowships are open only to students at CEPH-accredited units that are also members of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health.
- It’s the direct route to the CPH exam. The National Board of Public Health Examiners lets students and graduates of CEPH-accredited schools and programs sit for the Certified in Public Health exam.

CEPH Accredited MPH Programs by the Numbers
Across the 324 schools listed on this site, 232 hold CEPH accreditation as a school or program. Of 488 MPH programs, 414 are at those accredited units.
Accreditation doesn’t lock you into one format. CEPH says many accredited schools and programs offer online degrees, and 258 of the MPH programs here are online. Browse online MPH programs or MPH programs with no GRE and check the CEPH line on each profile.
Two well-known online names readers ask about:
- Southern New Hampshire University. CEPH lists its MPH program as accredited, with the current term running to December 31, 2028.
- Walden University. CEPH lists its public health program as accredited, with the current term running to July 1, 2032.
Western Governors University wasn’t on CEPH’s accredited list or its applicant list when both were checked in September 2026.
What Probation and Applicant Status Mean for You
Two statuses sit between “accredited” and “not accredited,” and they carry different risks.
Applicant status means CEPH has accepted a school’s first application and the review is underway. Applicant isn’t an accredited category. The process typically takes about three years, and CEPH is clear that being an applicant is no guarantee. If accreditation comes through, CEPH backdates it to the later of the date the application was accepted or the date of the latest extension. NBPHE lets applicant-program alumni take the CPH exam, but they stay provisionally certified until the program is accredited.
Probation is still accreditation, but it signals serious concerns the school has to fix by a set end date. It keeps enrolled students protected. Within seven business days of a probation decision, the school must tell current and prospective students the date by which they need to graduate to be sure of finishing at an accredited program. If the problems aren’t fixed, CEPH revokes accreditation on that end date.

Neither status rules a program out. A probation school may clear its issues, and an applicant may be accredited before you graduate. The risk is yours to weigh: if you need a CEPH degree for a specific job, pick a program whose graduation date for you falls inside a secure accreditation term.
How to Check CEPH Accreditation for Any School
It takes a few minutes:
- Search the CEPH list. Go to CEPH’s accredited schools and programs list. CEPH says its own site is the only information it can vouch for, and it updates the list within 30 days of each decision.
- Match the unit to the degree. Make sure the school or program listed is the one that offers your MPH. At a university with several campuses, check the exact campus.
- Read the notes. Look for an asterisk marking probationary accreditation, and note the date the current term runs to.
- Check the applicant list. If a school isn’t accredited, see whether it’s on CEPH’s applicant list and when its site visit is set.
- Confirm the term length. A first accreditation runs five years; reaccreditation runs seven.

Is WGU CEPH Accredited?
Western Governors University did not appear on CEPH's list of accredited schools and programs or on its applicant list when both were checked on September 27, 2026. Check ceph.org again before you apply, because CEPH updates its list within 30 days of each decision.
Is SNHU CEPH Accredited?
