Are There 1-Year MPH Programs Online?

Yes. Several 1 year MPH programs online let you finish in 11 to 16 months: Nova Southeastern in as little as 11 months, Emory's Accelerated MPH in 12 or 15 months, and Chamberlain in as few as 14. This site lists 54 accelerated and one-year MPH programs at 51 schools. None of them cut the CEPH minimum of 42 semester credits; they fit the same work into fewer months.

An accelerated MPH doesn’t shrink the degree. It shrinks the calendar. CEPH requires every MPH to carry at least 42 semester credits or 56 quarter credits, and among the accelerated programs here that publish credits, the median is exactly 42. What changes is the pace: three full-time semesters in a row, 8-week terms that run through the summer, or a summer session stacked in front of a normal academic year.

This site lists 54 accelerated and one-year MPH programs at 51 schools in 23 states. 32 have an online version, 27 a campus version and 13 a hybrid version. Most are private: 31 are at private nonprofit universities, 20 at public ones and 3 at for-profit schools. 46 are at CEPH-accredited schools and 4 at schools still in CEPH’s applicant stage.

1 Year MPH Programs Online

These are the online and hybrid MPH programs with the shortest published timelines:

Nova Southeastern MPH 11 months (three full-time semesters) 42 $717 per credit Accredited
Emory Accelerated MPH 12 or 15 months (3 semesters) 42 $28,986 per semester Accredited
Hawaii Pacific University MPH 12 months (fall entry) 42 $1,483 per credit Accredited
Claremont Graduate University Accelerated MPH 12 to 18 months 44 units $2,070 per unit Accredited

West Coast University MPH 16 months (4 trimesters) 42 $608 per credit Accredited
Cal State San Marcos MPH 16 months 42 $650 per unit Accredited

Blank cells mean the program doesn’t publish that figure. Bridgeport’s program, run jointly with Goodwin University, is in CEPH’s applicant stage, which isn’t accreditation and isn’t guaranteed.

If you want the fastest option at a lower price, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville takes 16 to 22 months at $499.10 per credit, fees included, for in-state and out-of-state students alike.

One-Year MPH Programs on Campus, and Who They’re for

The campus one-year programs split into two groups, and it matters which one you’re looking at.

Open to recent graduates. UC Davis runs an accelerated, in-person, 56-unit MPH designed for 10 to 12 months, practicum included. Berkeley’s Interdisciplinary MPH runs 11 months, July to May. Sacred Heart offers a one-year full-time track at $750 per credit, and East Stroudsburg a 12-month accelerated track at $602 per credit for Pennsylvania residents. Florida International offers one-year tracks in Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Global Health and two others.

Built for people with advanced degrees or long experience. UCLA’s one-year MPH in Health Policy and Management is for applicants who already hold an academic or professional doctorate. UC San Diego’s one-year option is for medical students, physicians and health sciences doctoral degree holders. Yale’s Advanced Professional MPH runs 11 months, a 7-week summer session plus two semesters, and admits doctoral degree holders, master’s holders with 2 years of experience, or bachelor’s holders with 5. Harvard’s 45-credit MPH takes 1 year full time.

If you’re coming straight from a bachelor’s degree, the second group mostly isn’t an option. Read eligibility before you read the timeline.

What Speed Costs, and What It Saves

Finishing fast doesn’t mean paying less tuition. Tuition follows credits, and every program here requires about the same number. Across the 27 accelerated programs that publish a per-credit rate, the median is $825, and the range runs from $205 to $2,644. Estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees) has a median of $36,750 across 25 programs.

Program Estimated tuition Time
UPR Medical Sciences MPH, Environmental Health $11,890 1 year and a summer (day format)
SUNY Downstate MPH $19,782 As few as three semesters
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Accelerated Online MPH $20,962 16 to 22 months
East Stroudsburg MPH $25,284 12-month track
Chamberlain University Online MPH $25,370 As few as 14 months
Claremont Graduate University Accelerated MPH $91,080 12 to 18 months
USC Online MPH $106,638 As few as four semesters (fast track)
University of Miami MPH $111,048 1 year (accelerated)

What speed does save is time: a year less out of the workforce, or a year sooner into a higher-paying role. It can save fees too: West Coast University charges a $2,000 technology fee on its accelerated track and $3,500 on its 28-month working-professional track. Miami’s figure is before its tuition waiver support of up to $60,000 for incoming MPH students.

There’s a financing catch. New graduate borrowers can take up to $20,500 a year in federal unsubsidized loans, and Grad PLUS loans are gone for new borrowers. A program that bills its whole tuition inside twelve months gives you fewer academic years of loan eligibility to cover it, so plan the gap with savings, scholarships or employer help. The MPH scholarships guide covers the options.

The Trade-Offs of a One-Year MPH

The practicum gets squeezed. In a two-year MPH, the practicum usually fills the summer between years. CEPH lets it be concentrated or spread out, but in a one-year program there’s no spare summer, so it runs alongside classes. You still need at least five competencies and two real work products.

The capstone arrives fast. CEPH places the integrative learning experience at or near the end of the program. In a 12-month MPH, “the end” comes only a few months after you start, which leaves little time to find a topic, a partner organization and data.

Less room to change direction. A two-year student can try an epidemiology course and switch concentration. In one year you pick early. The accelerated programs here list fewer concentrations, with Epidemiology (10 programs) and Global Health (8) the most common.

Full time means full time. Hawaii Pacific’s 12-month MPH puts 2 to 3 courses in every 8-week term. Working more than part time alongside that is unrealistic for most people.

Faster Routes That Aren’t One-Year Programs

If you’re still an undergraduate, a combined degree may beat any one-year MPH. Berkeley offers 4+1 options in Epidemiology/Biostatistics, Food, Nutrition and Population Health, and Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health. CEPH treats accelerated and combined programs like the MD/MPH as their own category, with an existing concentration or a curriculum built for the combined degree. See dual-degree MPH programs and MD/MPH programs.

Start Dates Change the Finish Line

With accelerated programs, when you start can matter as much as how fast you go. Several run summer starts: UC Davis begins in Summer Session II in August, Berkeley’s 11-month MPH starts in July, and Yale’s Advanced Professional MPH opens with a 7-week summer session in July and August. Online programs are more flexible. Claremont’s accelerated online MPH has six start dates a year, and Hawaii Pacific takes 12 months for a fall start but 16 months for a spring start.

Applications split evenly: 24 accelerated programs use SOPHAS and 24 apply directly to the school. For a summer start, plan your transcripts, letters and deadlines backward from July or August, not from a September start.

How to Choose an Accelerated MPH

  • Check eligibility first. Several one-year campus programs require a doctorate or years of experience.
  • Compare credits, not months. Nearly every program sits at or near 42 credits; the month count is a schedule choice.
  • Price the whole program. Per-semester pricing like Emory’s $28,986 and per-credit pricing like Chamberlain’s $590 need converting before you compare.
  • Find where the practicum fits. Look for a published plan for doing it alongside coursework.
  • Confirm CEPH status. 46 of the 54 programs are at CEPH-accredited schools.

For the standard timelines, read how long an MPH takes. If a year of full-time study won’t work, compare hybrid and part-time MPH programs or online MPH programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Really Finish an MPH in One Year?

Yes, if you study full time through the summer. UC Davis designs its MPH for 10 to 12 months, Berkeley's Interdisciplinary MPH runs 11 months from July to May, and Emory's Accelerated MPH takes three semesters. Each still requires at least 42 semester credits or the quarter-unit equivalent.

Does a One-Year MPH Cost Less?

Not automatically. Tuition follows credits, not months. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's accelerated online MPH has an estimated tuition of $20,962, while Claremont Graduate University's accelerated online MPH comes to $91,080 before fees.

Can I Work Full Time During an Accelerated MPH?

It's hard. One-year programs are full-time loads: Hawaii Pacific's 12-month MPH puts 2 to 3 courses in every 8-week term. If you need to keep working, look at programs with a working-professional track, such as West Coast University's 28-month option, or at part-time and hybrid formats.

Do Accelerated MPH Programs Require the GRE?

Few do. Among the 54 accelerated programs here, 18 say the GRE isn't required, 6 make it optional and 2 let you waive it.

Who Qualifies for One-Year MPH Programs Aimed at Doctors?

Some one-year tracks require an advanced degree. UCLA's one-year MPH in Health Policy and Management is for applicants with an academic or professional doctoral degree, and UC San Diego's one-year option is for medical students, physicians and health sciences doctoral degree holders.
