Who Hires Public Health Graduates in Colorado

Colorado’s public health system is built on local agencies. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is the state agency, but most counties run their own health department, from Denver Department of Public Health and Environment to Larimer County Health Department in Fort Collins and Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment in Greeley. Several rural areas share one agency: Northeast Colorado Health Department in Sterling serves six counties (Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma), and Silver Thread Public Health District covers Mineral and Hinsdale counties. If you want rural practice, those district agencies are where an MPH generalist does a bit of everything.

Notice how many of those agency names end in “and Environment”. Environmental health is core public health work here, and the job counts show it: about 3,080 environmental and occupational health specialists work in Colorado at a median of $101,400, against about 430 epidemiologists at $73,750. Health services managers are the biggest group, about 8,400 jobs at a median of $134,910. If pay and job volume drive your choice, look hard at the environmental health specialist and health services manager paths before defaulting to epidemiology.

One School, Three Campuses: Which One Fits You

Colorado doesn’t have competing MPH programs so much as one CEPH-accredited school, the Colorado School of Public Health (ColoradoSPH), with three front doors. You apply through SOPHAS, and the degree is 42 to 45 credits with a 2-credit practicum and a 2-credit capstone. Where you enroll decides your concentration.

CU Anschutz, Aurora

The CU Anschutz MPH has the widest menu: Applied Analytics, Informatics and AI; Community Health Sciences; Environment, Climate & Health; Epidemiology; Health Systems, Management & Policy; and Maternal & Child Health. It is also the big one, with 472 public health master’s degrees awarded in 2022-23 across the university. Pick it if you want a data, climate or health systems focus on an academic medical campus.

Colorado State University, Fort Collins

The CSU campus MPH offers Community Health Promotion, Epidemiology, Global and Population Health, One Health and Public Health Nutrition. It is the one campus with an accelerated plan: carry a heavier load and finish in as few as 15 months. CSU is also home to a five-year MPH-DVM, plus MPH-MBA and MPH-MSW dual degrees, so the One Health concentration and the dual-degree options are what set this campus apart.

University of Northern Colorado, Greeley

UNC hosts the Community Health Education MPH, taught as an evening program with a remote option. It suits you if you work full time in northern Colorado and want health education practice.

Fully Online

The online ColoradoSPH MPH has its own concentration list, including two you can’t take on campus: Leadership & Public Health Practice and Population Mental Health & Wellbeing. It suits working professionals anywhere in the state, especially in counties far from the Front Range.

Residency Is the Cost Lever in Colorado

Because the MPH rate is the same on all three campuses, where you study doesn’t change tuition. Residency does. In 2026-27 Colorado residents pay $995 per credit hour and non-residents pay $1,566. At 42 credits, the resident estimate for the CU Anschutz MPH is $41,790 in tuition before fees. Online courses add $100 per course at CU Anschutz.

The lower-cost route inside the same school is a Master of Science. The CU Anschutz MS degrees in biostatistics, epidemiology and worker health, safety and well-being charge residents $671 per credit hour, with an estimated resident tuition of $20,801 at 31 credits. The trade-off: an MS is research and methods training without the MPH’s broad practice core. The MPH vs MS guide walks through that choice.

For a rural focus outside ColoradoSPH, Western Colorado University in Gunnison offers a 39-credit Master of Behavioral Science in Rural Community Health at $730 per credit hour plus $73.40 in fees per credit. Its practicum partners with rural and Native communities. It is not an MPH and not CEPH accredited, so weigh that against the jobs you want; the CEPH accreditation guide explains when it matters.
