Who Hires MPH Graduates in New Mexico

The largest public health employer in the state is the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). It runs eight divisions, and two of them are built for MPH skills: the Public Health Division and the Epidemiology & Response Division. A third, the Scientific Laboratory Division, hires people with lab and surveillance backgrounds.

Unlike states with independent county health boards, New Mexico delivers much of its prevention work through the department’s own local Public Health Offices, plus contracts with community providers. Inside the Public Health Division, the working sections are Family Health, Infectious Disease, Population and Community Health, Primary Care Clinics and WIC. If you want to run a maternal health or immunization program in Farmington or Roswell, you’d most likely be working for the state, not a county.

New Mexico also has something few states do: an Office of Community Health Workers inside NMDOH, set up in 2008. The Community Health Workers Act of 2014 lets the department offer voluntary CHW certification, and the office runs a standardized statewide training program. For MPH graduates, that means a certified CHW workforce you may supervise, train or evaluate, especially in health promotion roles. See the community health worker career guide for pay and duties.

UNM or NMSU: Which New Mexico MPH Fits You

Both schools are public and CEPH accredited, and every MPH they offer is 42 credits. The differences are location, format and focus.

Choose the UNM MPH if you want epidemiology or a clinical track. UNM’s College of Population Health offers four concentrations: Community Health, Epidemiology, Health Systems, Services & Policy, and Public Health Clinician. The clinician track is unusual. It prepares health professionals for population health roles inside local, state, tribal, national or global care systems. The core leans hard on equity, with required courses such as Determinants and Equity in Public Health and Interventions for Health Equity, and you can focus on health outcomes in Latin American or Indigenous communities. You apply through SOPHAS; the deadline for fall 2027 entry is January 5, 2027. Many full-time students take six semesters, and you get up to seven years.

Choose NMSU if you need to study online or work near the border. NMSU’s Health Behavior and Health Promotion MPH runs both in Las Cruces and online. Its Health Management, Administration, and Policy MPH is online only, which makes it the state’s pick for working managers. Both require a field placement and 3 credits of cultural foundation coursework, and you can add a graduate minor in U.S.-Mexico Border Health. NMSU admits directly, without SOPHAS, and neither NMSU MPH requires the GRE.

NMSU awarded 114 public health master’s degrees in 2022-23 to UNM’s 58, so you’ll find a bigger cohort in Las Cruces, much of it online.

What Residency Saves You

The in-state discount at both schools is large, so establishing New Mexico residency before you enroll matters.

At UNM, fall 2026 base tuition for Health Sciences graduate programs, which include Population Health, is $306.38 per credit hour for New Mexico residents and $1,083.78 for non-residents, before fees and a per-credit Population Health course differential. Non-residents in their first two semesters who take six hours or fewer pay the resident rate, which helps if you start part time.

At NMSU’s Las Cruces campus, fall 2026 graduate tuition is $287.80 per credit for residents and $1,001.30 for non-residents taking more than six credits. NMSU has a border-specific break too: students from El Paso pay 1.1 times the resident rate, and students from Mexico pay 1.5 times.
