Who Hires Public Health Graduates in Arizona
The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) is the state’s health agency. Besides disease prevention and control, health promotion, community public health, environmental health, maternal and child health and emergency preparedness, ADHS licenses and regulates child care centers, assisted living centers, nursing homes, hospitals and emergency services. So a state public health career in Arizona can mean licensing and inspection work as well as disease and prevention programs.
Arizona’s job market is weighted toward management and environmental work. The state has 11,840 health services manager jobs at a median of $128,850 and 3,220 environmental and occupational health specialist jobs, against about 340 epidemiologist jobs. If you want to stay in Arizona, a health services administration or environmental health concentration matches where the hiring is. Read the health services manager and environmental health specialist career guides.
Border and tribal health also shape the work here. The University of Arizona notes that Arizona is home to 22 federally recognized tribes, and its college runs border and binational research and mobile health units in Phoenix and Tucson.

University of Arizona or NAU: The Two CEPH Choices
University of Arizona Zuckerman College of Public Health
The University of Arizona runs Arizona’s only accredited college of public health and awarded 290 public health master’s degrees in 2022-23, the most of any Arizona school after Grand Canyon. Its campus MPH is a two-year full-time program with an internship in community settings, and part-time students can take up to six years. The campus menu is broad: Climate Change and Health, Environmental and Occupational Health, Epidemiology, Family and Child Health, Global Health, Health Behavior Health Promotion, Health Services Administration, One Health, Population Aging and Long-term Care, and Public Health Practice and Policy. The college has locations in both Tucson and Phoenix. You apply through SOPHAS, and the GRE isn’t required.
The online MPH is a separate program: 42 credits in 7.5-week courses at $950 per credit, finishing in as few as two years. Choose UArizona if you want the most concentrations in the state or a research-heavy MS in epidemiology, biostatistics or environmental health.
Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff
Northern Arizona University focuses on rural, tribal and border communities. Its Flagstaff MPH in Health Promotion is built for working students, with most classes between 4 and 9 pm, and it takes as little as two years or can be done part time. You take 9 core courses, 3 health promotion courses and electives from fields like Applied Indigenous Studies, plus a 3-credit applied practice experience at a public health agency. The Indigenous Health emphasis swaps most electives for three courses on Indian health systems, tribal governance and community-based participatory research. The only prerequisite is an intro statistics course. NAU also offers an MPH in Nutrition in Flagstaff and an online Health Promotion MPH.
The WRGP Discount and Other Ways to Cut Cost
Both CEPH programs take part in the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP). At the Zuckerman College, residents of Alaska, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming may enroll in the MPH at Arizona resident rates, which the college compares to a scholarship of $20,000 a year. You apply through the scholarship and assistantship application sent with your offer of admission. NAU says the same for Western-state residents.
The University of Arizona also funds teaching and research assistantships. A 10 hour a week appointment pays about $6,413 a semester and takes 50% off base in-state tuition; a 20 hour a week appointment pays about $12,827 and covers 100% of base in-state tuition. You still pay about $1,500 a semester in mandatory fees. The college gives funding priority to full-time students and to those who apply by the first deadline, so an early application is worth money. File your FAFSA by March 1. See the MPH scholarships guide for more options.
Grand Canyon, ASU and the Other Private Options
Grand Canyon University in Phoenix is the biggest producer of public health master’s degrees in Arizona, with 374 in 2022-23. Its online MPH is 48 credits at $610 per credit, with 8-week courses and at least 150 hours of supervised field experience. GCU is a CEPH applicant, and applicant status does not guarantee accreditation. Weigh that if you want a job that screens for a CEPH degree; the CEPH accreditation guide explains why.
Arizona State University offers an MPH in Public Health Technology plus MS degrees in biostatistics, population health and global health, many in 7.5-week online classes; its MPH is not on the CEPH list. Midwestern University in Glendale offers a 56-quarter-credit online MPH at $944 per credit hour, and the University of Phoenix offers an online MPH in Community Health Leadership at $698 per credit. Neither is CEPH accredited.
