Who Hires MPH Graduates in Vermont

The Vermont Department of Health is the state’s lead public health agency, headquartered in Waterbury. Its work spans alcohol and drug programs, children and family health, emergency preparedness and EMS, environmental health, health professionals and systems, chronic disease prevention, immunizations and infectious disease, and the state Public Health Laboratory.

For a job outside central Vermont, look at the department’s 12 district offices: Barre, Bennington, Brattleboro, Burlington, Middlebury, Morrisville, Newport, Rutland, St. Albans, St. Johnsbury, Springfield and White River Junction. Each one provides health services locally and partners with community organizations to respond to local needs. Vermont’s health education specialists earn a median $68,140, above the U.S. figure of $64,070, but the state counts only about 180 of those jobs, so expect a small pool of openings at any one time. Health services managers, a far larger group at about 860 jobs, earn a median of $128,690; the pay table below has the rest, and the health educator career guide explains the role.

One Program, Built to Be Taken From Anywhere

Vermont has a single MPH, and it’s online. The University of Vermont runs it through the Division of Public Health in the Larner College of Medicine, and CEPH accredits it as a program. In 2022-23, UVM awarded 88 public health master’s degrees. Because there’s no campus version, a nurse in Newport and an analyst in Burlington take the same courses on the same schedule.

How the UVM MPH Is Built

The 42 credits break down like this:

  • 18 credits of national competency core courses (six courses)
  • 9 credits of required advanced core (three courses)
  • 9 credits of electives (three courses)
  • 6 credits of culminating project experience, which pairs an Applied Practice Experience with an Integrated Learning Experience across a fall and spring semester, including 20 or more hours at an organization you choose

You can finish full time in one to two years, with 15-month and two-year plans, or stretch it part time for up to five years. You can take the generalist MPH or add the Global Health Leadership concentration; compare it with other global health MPH programs if that’s your focus. Applications open for fall, spring and summer starts, and the GRE isn’t required.

If you aren’t ready for a full degree, UVM also offers four online graduate certificates and a DrPH. The epidemiology certificate, for example, is 12 online credits: Epidemiology I and II (PH 6020 and PH 6070), Public Health Biostatistics (PH 6030) and one elective. A 6-credit microcertificate pairs just Epidemiology I with Biostatistics. That’s a low-cost way to test whether quantitative public health work suits you, or to add epidemiology skills to a clinical or nonprofit job you already hold in Vermont. See public health certificates and DrPH programs to compare them with options elsewhere.

What It Costs Vermonters

The MPH page points to UVM’s Graduate College tuition schedule, which lists 2026-27 standard graduate tuition of $706 per credit for Vermont residents and $1,944 per credit for out-of-state students. Residency is the single biggest cost lever here. If you live out of state, UVM says every out-of-state student starting in Fall 2026 is considered for scholarships.

UVM undergraduates have a lower-cost route in. The Accelerated MPH lets students accepted to graduate school take six public health graduate credits in their senior year that count toward both degrees, finishing the bachelor’s and the MPH in five years.

If one online program doesn’t fit, you aren’t limited to it. The online MPH programs page compares every online option open to Vermont residents, and the affordable MPH programs page ranks them by estimated tuition.
