Who Hires Public Health Graduates in Virginia

The biggest single employer is the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). It runs a statewide central office in Richmond and 35 local health districts, which together operate 119 local health departments with roughly 3,300 staff. The State Health Commissioner, appointed by the governor, leads the agency, and the work is split into four offices, including Community Health Services and Population Health & Preparedness.

That district structure shapes where the jobs are. Northern Virginia alone has separate districts for Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William, while far Southwest Virginia is covered by districts such as Lenowisco, Cumberland Plateau and Mount Rogers. If you want to stay in a particular region, look at that district’s openings as well as the central office in Richmond.

Virginia’s MPH programs lean on the same system for field training. VCU’s MPH requires a 180-hour internship in a professional public health setting outside the university, and it names VDH as one place students do it.

How Virginia’s Public Universities Train for That Work

Each public MPH has its own angle, and it’s worth matching yours to the job you want.

  • George Mason (Fairfax). Mason’s College of Public Health says it was the first in Virginia to earn CEPH accreditation. It sits next to Northern Virginia’s five health districts and houses nursing, nutrition, social work and health informatics in the same college. Its MPH runs on campus, online and hybrid.
  • VCU (Richmond). VCU’s School of Public Health requires at least 45 credits and offers concentrations in applied public health, cancer prevention and control science, epidemiology, health communication and health policy, online or in person. See the VCU MPH.
  • Virginia Tech (Blacksburg). Virginia Tech teaches a One Health approach linking human, animal and environmental health, with concentrations in infectious disease, environmental health and public health education. It’s the natural choice if you want veterinary public health: the school pairs the MPH with its DVM. See the Virginia Tech MPH.
  • Old Dominion (Norfolk). ODU’s Joint School of Public Health is a partnership with Norfolk State University, the first of its kind in Virginia, and it focuses on health disparities in eastern and coastal Virginia.

Largest Public Health Programs in Virginia

By public health master's degrees awarded in 2022-23 (U.S. Department of Education, IPEDS), Liberty University has Virginia's largest program, followed by George Mason University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Size tells you how many classmates, electives and alumni to expect, not how good a program is.

Public Health Pay in Virginia

Among the public health jobs an MPH leads to, medical and health services managers earn the highest median pay in Virginia, $129,270. Epidemiologists earn a median $84,930 (3% below u.s.), 15th of 43 states with a published figure, across 220 jobs.

What Residency Does to Your Tuition

Virginia’s public universities charge non-residents far more, and Old Dominion shows how wide the gap gets. For fall 2026, ODU’s standard graduate rate is $510 per credit for Virginia residents and $1,361 for non-residents, and both pay a $162 per-credit auxiliary charge on top. If you live outside Virginia and study online, ODU’s technology-delivered rate of $662 per credit sits much closer to the in-state price than to the campus out-of-state rate. So an out-of-state student choosing ODU should take the online MPH, not the campus version.

Private schools set one price. Liberty University’s online MPH lists $600 per credit full time, $665 part time and $310 for military students, and its 42 credits put estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees) at $25,200 for full-time students. The University of Lynchburg’s 36-credit online MPH costs $630 per credit, an estimated $22,680.

Don’t count on state loan repayment to cover a public health career. Virginia’s State Loan Repayment Program pays down educational loans only in exchange for at least two years of primary care or dental work at a site in a Health Professional Shortage Area. It helps a nurse practitioner or physician who adds an MPH, not a health educator or epidemiologist. For other ways to fund the degree, see the MPH scholarships guide.

Choosing Among Virginia’s MPH Programs

Liberty University is by far the largest producer, with 502 public health master’s degrees awarded in 2022-23, and its online MPH offers concentrations in community health promotion, environmental health, global health and nutrition. It suits you if you want a fully online, CEPH-accredited MPH at a fixed private price and a direct application instead of SOPHAS.

UVA suits you if you already have health experience and want speed: its 42-credit MPH can be done as an intensive one-year program, on campus in Charlottesville, with tracks in research in practice or health policy, law and ethics. The accelerated MPH programs page lists similar options nationwide.

Mason, VCU, Virginia Tech and ODU suit you if you want a public university and in-state pricing. Mason, Virginia Tech and ODU don’t require the GRE. All four apply through SOPHAS; the SOPHAS guide explains the timeline.

Shenandoah, Lynchburg and Virginia Union each offer an MPH but aren’t on the CEPH list. That matters if you’re aiming for the US Public Health Service, some military public health jobs or the state and local agencies that fill MPH-level jobs only with graduates of CEPH-accredited schools and programs. The CEPH accreditation guide explains what you give up. Once you’ve shortlisted, compare what the work pays with the epidemiologist career guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Finish an MPH in One Year in Virginia?

Yes, at the University of Virginia. Its 42-credit MPH can be completed as an intensive 1-year program, or over 3 or 4 semesters, with tracks in Research in Practice and in Health Policy, Law and Ethics. See the UVA MPH profile.

Does Old Dominion Charge Out-of-State Students More for Its Online MPH?

Less than for campus study. For fall 2026, Old Dominion charges graduate students outside Virginia $662 per credit hour for technology-delivered courses, against $1,523 per credit hour out of state on campus and $672 for Virginia residents (each including a $162 auxiliary charge).

Does Virginia Repay Student Loans for Public Health Workers?

Not through the state loan repayment program. The Virginia State Loan Repayment Program repays educational loans in exchange for at least two years of primary care or dental service at an eligible site in a Virginia Health Professional Shortage Area, so it fits clinicians who add an MPH rather than MPH graduates in public health jobs.
