Where North Carolina’s MPH Graduates Work

The state employer is the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Division of Public Health in Raleigh, whose disease prevention and health promotion programs protect communities from communicable diseases, epidemics and contaminated food and water. Much of the frontline work, though, happens in local health departments, and North Carolina treats them differently from most states.

North Carolina was the first state to require local health departments to be accredited. The program started in 2002, became law in 2006, and now puts every local department through an accreditation cycle every four years. The standards tie back to state statutes and Division of Public Health requirements. For you, that means county health jobs with written performance standards, and a steady demand for staff who can handle community health assessment, data and quality improvement, which is standard MPH coursework.

The accreditation program’s governing board sits in the North Carolina Institute for Public Health at UNC Gillings, one of several ties between the state’s public health agencies and its largest school. Epidemiologists in the state earn a median $84,770 across 220 jobs, and health education specialists hold 2,110 jobs.
