IU, Purdue or UIndy: Picking Among Indiana’s CEPH Programs

Indiana is unusual in having two separately accredited schools of public health inside one university system, plus two accredited programs.

IU Indianapolis: Fastest Online Route

The Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health runs one MPH curriculum in two formats. The hybrid MPH needs at least half your courses in person, uses 16-week terms, admits in fall and goes through SOPHAS. The online accelerated MPH uses 8-week courses with rolling admission and takes as little as 15 months full time. Admission criteria and faculty are the same, and you can switch format once. Its 45 credits include a one-credit course built around the Certified in Public Health exam, so you finish ready to sit for the CPH certification.

IU Bloomington: Environmental Health and Epidemiology on Campus

The IU School of Public Health-Bloomington has held CEPH school accreditation since 1997. Its residential MPH offers Behavioral, Social and Community Health, Environmental Health and Epidemiology, and it also runs an MS in Environmental and Occupational Health and an MS in Biostatistics. The GRE is optional. Choose it if you want a traditional two-year campus program in a college town.

Purdue: Family and Community Health

Purdue in West Lafayette has held program accreditation since October 24, 2015. The residential MPH offers Family and Community Health, Biostatistics and Epidemiology; the online MPH offers Family and Community Health and Epidemiology in 8-week classes with a 16-week practicum, and it doesn’t require the GRE.

University of Indianapolis: Health Disparities, Fully Online

UIndy offers a 42-credit online MPH with a single concentration in health disparities, which the school says is the only such concentration in the Midwest. You can stretch it to three or four years, and the practice experience and capstone can be done near where you live.

What Residency Is Worth at IU Indianapolis

At the Fairbanks School, Indiana residents pay $605.25 per credit hour whether they study hybrid or online. Out-of-state students pay $1,468.50 per credit hour for the hybrid format but only $652.33 online. So if you live outside Indiana, the online MPH costs far less than moving to Indianapolis for the hybrid one. These are tuition-only rates; fees are extra.

The school also awards four one-time FSPH Graduate Scholarships of $2,400 each to full-time master’s students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. You are considered after you complete the university’s general scholarship application. More funding ideas are in the MPH scholarships guide.

Purdue Global and the Private Programs

The largest program outside IU isn’t the one many people assume. Purdue Global, the online university, awarded 236 public health master’s degrees in 2022-23. Its MPH costs $420 per credit across 64 quarter credits, but its page cites only Higher Learning Commission institutional accreditation, and it isn’t on the CEPH list. The CEPH-accredited Purdue MPH is the West Lafayette program. If you are aiming for jobs that require a CEPH-accredited degree, read the CEPH accreditation guide before you choose.

Two private schools fill regional niches without CEPH accreditation. Valparaiso University in northwest Indiana offers an epidemiology-focused MPH online, on campus or hybrid. The University of Evansville offers a 39-credit online MPH in Health Policy at $640 per credit hour, a fit for southwest Indiana professionals who want a policy focus.
