Idaho State or Boise State: Accreditation Versus Location

Idaho’s two MPH programs take opposite approaches, and the choice mostly comes down to whether you need CEPH accreditation.

Idaho State University: Online, Accredited, Rural-Focused

Idaho State’s MPH is the state’s only CEPH-accredited MPH, accredited since 2002. It’s taught fully online, with live and self-paced classes, and it was built for working adults and people in rural areas. Faculty work from the Pocatello and Meridian campuses. You can start in fall, spring or summer on a rolling basis, and you apply through both SOPHAS and the ISU Graduate School.

If you already work in a small town clinic or district office, ISU’s 15-credit Graduate Certificate in Rural Health pairs well with the MPH, and its 18-credit Graduate Certificate in Public Health is a shorter way to test the field first. ISU also offers a Master of Health Education of 30 credits if your goal is health education rather than broad public health practice.

Boise State University: In-Person Evenings in Boise

Boise State’s MPH is a campus program, with most classes in person at the Health Science Riverside Building. Classes meet in the evening, everyone starts in fall as a cohort, and you can finish in 2 years full time or 3 years part time. Emphasis areas include Prevention and Intervention Programming, Data-Driven Decision-Making, and Environmental and Occupational Health. It awarded 32 public health master’s degrees in 2022-23, more than Idaho State’s 14.

Boise State is not on the CEPH accredited list. That rules it out for jobs that require a CEPH-accredited degree, such as the U.S. Public Health Service and some military and state or local government roles. Read the CEPH accreditation guide before you commit. Boise State undergraduates can start early through an accelerated MPH that counts up to 12 graduate credits toward both degrees.

What Idaho Residents and Neighbors Pay

At Idaho State, residency is the biggest cost factor. For 2026-27, full-time graduate tuition is $5,820 a semester for Idaho residents and $15,475 for non-residents. Part-time students pay $613 per credit as residents and $1,524 as non-residents, including the consolidated fee. At the resident rate, estimated tuition for the MPH’s 42 credits is $25,746 before other costs.

Boise State offers a way around out-of-state pricing for western students. Its MPH takes part in WICHE’s Western Regional Graduate Program, so eligible residents of participating western states pay in-state tuition. Boise State also offers several graduate research and teaching assistantships each year, plus assistantships through its Wellness Services office.
