Florida Runs Public Health as One Statewide Department

Florida’s public health system is unusually centralized, and that shapes where you’ll work. The Florida Department of Health, led by the State Surgeon General, includes the state health office in Tallahassee and all 67 county health departments. Those county departments operate from 255 sites, in buildings provided through partnerships with county governments. The department also runs 3 public health laboratories, 8 Children’s Medical Services area offices and 12 Medical Quality Assurance regional offices.

For you, that means a county epidemiology or environmental health job in Miami-Dade and one in the Panhandle sit inside the same state agency. Moving between counties, or from a county office up to Tallahassee, is a transfer rather than a new employer.

The biggest pools of Florida jobs an MPH leads to aren’t in epidemiology. Florida has about 300 epidemiologist jobs, against 6,760 environmental and occupational health specialists and 42,700 health services managers. If you plan to stay in state, look hard at an environmental health or health management concentration. The environmental health specialist guide and the health services manager guide break down that work.

How Florida’s Accredited Programs Differ

Nine Florida schools hold CEPH accreditation, and the big public universities dominate by size.

  • University of South Florida, Tampa: the largest program, with 412 public health master’s degrees in 2022-23. Its campus and online MPHs are separate tracks with different concentrations. The online side includes unusual options such as Global Disaster Management, Humanitarian Relief and Homeland Security, and Infection Control, which suit a hurricane-state emergency management career. You apply through SOPHAS.
  • University of Florida, Gainesville: 366 degrees. The campus MPH offers Biostatistics, Environmental Health and Epidemiology, which aren’t in the online version. The online MPH is 48 credits with no campus visits, prerecorded lectures and proctored exams.
  • Florida International University, Miami: 202 degrees, with one-year accelerated tracks in Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Global Health and more. It suits you if you want to finish fast in South Florida.
  • University of West Florida, Pensacola: a 42-credit online MPH, 18 to 24 months, with a two-semester practicum under a mentor. It admits in fall, spring and summer.
  • University of North Florida, Jacksonville: a hybrid MPH with evening classes, built for people who already work full time.
  • Florida State University and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee put you a short drive from the state health office. FSU’s MPH focuses on health policy.
  • University of Miami and Nova Southeastern are the private accredited options. Nova’s 42-credit MPH can finish in 11 months full time, online or in a hybrid evening format.

The Residency Math at Florida Public Universities

Where you live changes the price more in Florida than in most states, but online programs soften it.

At UWF, the 2026-27 online graduate rate is $385.85 per credit hour for Florida residents and $1,144.43 for non-residents. Non-residents admitted to an online program can apply for a 90% waiver of the non-resident portion, which brings the rate to $494.22. The waiver isn’t automatic: you request it every semester. One regional quirk: if you qualify for Alabama residency, UWF charges an Alabama tuition differential instead, and you can’t use the online waiver.

UF takes the simpler route. Its online MPH costs $550.00 per credit whatever your residency, plus $35.67 per credit in fees. Full-time campus students instead pay block tuition in four equal payments over their first four semesters, and non-residents pay more on campus.

The University of Miami lists $2,644 per graduate credit hour for 2025-2026, the highest in the state. Every incoming MPH and MSPH student gets up to $60,000 in tuition support, and students who already hold an MD, JD or PhD may waive up to nine credits. Run the numbers before you rule it out. The MPH scholarships guide covers other funding.

Florida Programs Outside the CEPH List

A few Florida programs aren’t CEPH accredited, which matters if you want federal, military or some state and local government jobs that require a CEPH-accredited degree. See the CEPH accreditation guide.

Rollins College in Winter Park is a CEPH applicant for its evening MPH, which is a step toward accreditation but not a guarantee. Everglades University awarded 94 public health master’s degrees in 2022-23 through a 36-credit, 12-month Public Health Administration degree with Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Functional Nutrition concentrations; it’s shorter than an accredited MPH. Barry University and Bethune-Cookman University also offer MPHs outside the CEPH list.

If none of Florida’s programs fits your schedule, compare accredited online MPH programs nationwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Alabama Residents Qualify for the UWF Out-of-State Waiver?
