UAA’s Online MPH: Built for the Circumpolar North

The University of Alaska Anchorage MPH in Public Health Practice is Alaska’s one CEPH-accredited MPH, and every required course is offered by distance, so you can keep working anywhere in the state while you study. It takes at least 42 credits.

The core covers health education, environmental and occupational health, health management and policy, biostatistics and epidemiology. What sets it apart is the Alaska content: courses in circumpolar health issues and in managing public health emergencies and disasters, plus research methods and program evaluation. You build your own emphasis from three 600-level courses, and that emphasis becomes the base for your Applied Practice Experience and Integrated Learning Experience. If you are thinking about a PhD or DrPH later, a practicum thesis option replaces the default culminating courses.

You apply directly to UAA, not through SOPHAS. The application asks for an essay on a major public health challenge in your own community and one or two evidence-based fixes, so come ready with a local problem you know well.

Two shorter routes lead in. UAA’s 18-credit online Graduate Certificate in Public Health transfers in full to the MPH, which lets you test graduate study before committing. And UAA health sciences undergraduates can start MPH courses in their junior year through the accelerated option, counting 6 credits toward both degrees. UAA also lists an MSW/MPH dual degree for social workers.

What Residency Means for Alaska’s MPH

On paper, UAA’s 2026-27 graduate rate is $549 per credit hour for Alaska residents and $1,173 for nonresidents. In practice, the gap rarely applies to this degree: the catalog says nonresident tuition is waived for fully online UAA courses. At the resident rate, estimated tuition for 42 credits is $23,058 before fees.

UAA also charges resident rates to students in the WICHE Western Regional Graduate Program, and to students with a parent, step-parent or grandparent who lives in Alaska and qualifies as a resident. If you live out of state, the thing to check is not price but eligibility: the catalog warns that State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement rules can affect whether you can enroll from your state. The UAF One Health Master’s: A Different Path

The University of Alaska Fairbanks doesn’t offer an MPH. Its One Health Master (O.H.M.) is a 30-credit degree, on the Fairbanks campus or online, that links human, animal and environmental health across the circumpolar North. You choose a Biomedical or a Co-Production of Knowledge concentration. The GRE is neither required nor considered, you need a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, and applications close June 1 for fall entry.

It suits you if your interest is where human, animal and environmental health meet in northern communities, rather than a general public health career. It is not on the CEPH accredited list, so if you want jobs that screen for a CEPH degree, UAA’s MPH is the safer choice; the CEPH accreditation guide explains why that matters.
