Dual MPA/MPH Program at New York University Program Overview 2025
Program Highlights
The MPA-MPH dual-degree program at New York University, offered in partnership with NYU's School of Global Public Health (SGPH), is designed to address complex global health issues such as COVID-19, diabetes, maternal and infant health, refugee crises, and access to clean water.
This program equips students with the academic background to understand the trends, contributing factors, and consequences of global health challenges, alongside the practical tools to implement solutions. Graduates will be prepared to lead initiatives in nonprofit organizations, providing aid on the front lines, or work within government agencies to shape new policies for evolving health landscapes.
Delivery Modes
The program is structured for full-time, on-campus study. A sample program sequence outlines a three-year path of study with registration residencies alternating between the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the School of Global Public Health.
Curriculum Overview
The dual-degree program requires a total of 69 credits for completion.
36 Credits toward the Master of Public Health (MPH). Students should consult SGPH's program requirement checklist for MPH courses and their sequencing (use this version if you matriculated before fall 2024, and this version if you matriculate fall 2024 or later):
18 MPH Core credits
9 Global Health Concentration credits
9 Elective credits
33 Credits toward the Master of Public Administration (MPA). Visit MPA program requirement checksheets for courses:
12 Core credits (The MPH course Biostatistics for Public Health (GPH-GU 2/5995) waives the MPA's Statistical Methods requirement (CORE-GP 1011)).
3 Capstone credits (The MPA's Capstone also fulfills the MPH's culminating experience requirement).
18 Specialization & Elective credits (MPA in Public & Nonprofit Management & Policy: 9 Specialization + 9 Elective credits; MPA in Health Policy & Management: 10.5 to 15 Specialization + 7.5 to 3 Elective credits. Some MPH courses may waive certain MPA requirements depending on specialization).
The curriculum integrates practical experience. Wagner's Professional Experience Requirement (PER) also satisfies the MPH's Applied Practice Experience (APE) requirement.
Admissions Requirements
Prospective students are required to apply separately to NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and NYU's School of Global Public Health. Admission to both schools is necessary to qualify for the dual-degree program.

Career and Practical Experience
The program prepares graduates for impactful careers addressing global health challenges, whether through nonprofit aid, shaping government policy, or other avenues. Wagner's Professional Experience Requirement (PER) also satisfies the MPH's Applied Practice Experience (APE) requirement. Many MPA-MPH students opt to complete at least two internships during their time in the program—one more focused on Public Health, the other more related to their MPA specialization.
Students will work with advisors from both schools to carefully choose coursework and receive support from faculty, staff, peer, and career advisors, equipping them with frameworks and analytical skills for diverse career paths at the intersection of public service and global health.
