Dual BA/MPH Program at New York University Program Overview 2025
Program Highlights & Accreditation
The Gallatin School of Individualized Study and the School of Global Public Health (GPH) at New York University offer a dual-degree BA-MPH program. This program enables students to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Gallatin’s Individualized Major and a Master of Public Health (MPH) in less time than completing the programs separately.
The dual degree emphasizes interdisciplinary study, leveraging the strengths of both schools. It is designed for academically strong students with a commitment to public leadership and service.
Students accelerate their progress to an MPH degree by earning a significant portion of MPH credits during their undergraduate studies. The available MPH concentrations include Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Global Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences, or Public Health Nutrition.
Accreditation information for the MPH program is not specified in this document.
Delivery Modes
The BA-MPH dual degree program is designed for full-time students. The structure of the dual degree, involving undergraduate studies at Gallatin, implies an on-campus delivery format. The program structure allows for accelerated completion of both degrees.
Curriculum Overview
The MPH degree requires a total of 46 credits. Students in the dual-degree program earn a portion of these MPH credits during their undergraduate BA program, depending on their chosen MPH concentration:
Biostatistics or Global Health concentrations: 15 credits earned during the undergraduate program.
Epidemiology, Social & Behavioral Sciences, or Public Health Nutrition concentrations: 18 credits earned during the undergraduate program.
For some concentrations, these 15-18 credits comprise the six MPH required core courses. Up to 15 of these graduate credits can be counted towards both the BA and the MPH degrees.
The total credits for completing both degrees in the dual-degree program is 159 credits, compared to 174 credits if taken separately.
Admissions Requirements
Admission to the BA-MPH dual-degree program is open to Gallatin undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:
Completion of 64 units toward the BA degree.
A GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Completion of the equivalent of a college-level pre-calculus course.
Students in the dual-degree program must earn grades of C or higher in all MPH graduate courses and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA during their remaining Gallatin program. Failure to meet these standards may lead to review and potential dismissal from the dual-degree program, though students may still complete the BA degree.
Career & Practical Experience
The BA-MPH dual degree is designed to help students build a meaningful career in public service.
It aims to position students effectively for entry into the field of public health by helping them find practical applications for their ambitions to engage in public sphere work.
