Dual MPH/MSW Program at University of Illinois Chicago Program Overview 2025
Program Highlights
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) offers a joint Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program. This program is designed for students interested in public health social work, leveraging the complementary approaches of both disciplines to advance individual and community health and well-being. It emphasizes prevention and draws on multiple methods such as clinical interventions, education, research, advocacy, policy development, and community organizing.
The joint degree structure allows students to complete both degrees in a shorter period, typically three to three and one-half years, and facilitates the integration of competencies and perspectives from social work and public health.
Delivery Modes
The MSW/MPH joint degree program is recommended for full-time students.
Curriculum Overview
Students must complete a minimum of 42 semester hours of coursework at the UIC School of Public Health (SPH) for the MPH component, in addition to 62 semester hours for the MSW (inclusive of shared credit hours). The coursework for the joint degree includes:
Core courses in Public Health.
Divisional core courses in an SPH division (Community Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Environmental and Occupational Health, or Health Policy and Administration).
Shared electives.
Field work, integrating training in social work and public health.
A capstone project reflecting this integration.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants must apply to and be admitted separately to both the School of Public Health (for the MPH) and the Jane Addams College of Social Work (for the MSW). A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution is required. The GRE is required for admission to the SPH. Other application requirements are set by each college. Full-time applicants typically start in the MSW program, while those eligible for MSW Advanced Standing may start in the MPH program.
Career & Practical Experience
The program prepares graduates for careers that integrate public health and social work principles, focusing on prevention, equity, and addressing social determinants of health. Practical experience is gained through field instruction, optimally at sites allowing students to combine their social work and public health training. An example career focus mentioned by a graduate includes the reduction and prevention of youth violence.
