Program Highlights & Accreditation

The MBA/MPH joint degree program at the University of Illinois Chicago is designed for students aspiring to careers that bridge the business and public health sectors. Delivery Modes

Curriculum Overview

Students in the MBA/MPH joint degree program must fulfill requirements for both degrees.

MBA Requirements:

  • Core Requirements (26 semester hours): Includes courses such as Intro to Financial & Management Accounting, Microeconomics for Business Decisions, Intro to Corporate Finance, Decision Models & Info. Systems II, Organizational Behavior, Introduction to Marketing, and Enterprise Strategy.

  • Electives (12 semester hours): Students must take at least 12 semester hours of credits that comprise an approved concentration in the College of Business Administration. Concentrations include Accounting, Business Analytics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, International Business, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Real Estate, and Self-Directed.

MPH Requirements:

  • School-Wide Core Requirements (18-20 semester hours): Includes IPHS 401 (Determinants of Population Health), IPHS 403 (Public Health Systems, Policy and Management), IPHS 650 (Applied Practice Experience in Public Health - 3 semester hours), IPHS 698 (Integrative Learning Experience - 1 semester hour), and IPHS 650 (Interprofessional Education - 0 semester hours).

  • Analytic and Research Methods (6 semester hours): Either IPHS 402 (onsite, 6 semester hours) or IPHS 404 (online, 3 semester hours) and IPHS 405 (online, 3 semester hours).

  • Required Non-Credit Training: HIPAA Research, Human Subjects Research, Investigator Training 101, and Title IX Training – Sexual Harassment.

  • Divisional Requirements and Electives: Students must complete the divisional requirements and electives for one of the eight MPH programs: Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Maternal and Child Health (MCH), MCH Epidemiology, Public Health Informatics, or Public Health Management and Policy.

Admissions Requirements

Prospective students must submit mandatory applications to both the MBA program through the Liautaud Graduate School of Business and the MPH program through the School of Public Health. Specific prerequisites, GPA requirements, and other application components should be verified with each respective school.

Career & Practical Experience

This joint degree prepares graduates for careers that require expertise in both management and public health, typically in healthcare organizations or public health agencies. The MPH component includes an Applied Practice Experience (IPHS 650), providing hands-on experience in a public health setting, and an Integrative Learning Experience (IPHS 698) to synthesize knowledge from both disciplines.
