Program Highlights
The Health Education and Promotion (HEP) Master of Public Health (MPH) program at Utah State University (USU) trains students to be leaders in the field of Public Health. The degree emphasizes the behavioral, social, and cultural factors related to individual and population health and health disparities across the lifespan. Students learn to promote and sustain healthy environments and healthy lives for individuals and populations.
Delivery Modes
The MPH program is offered at USU's Logan campus, various Statewide campuses, and is also available 100% online through USU Online. The online format allows students nationwide to participate, and international students can complete the program online from their home country, though it does not meet VISA requirements for in-person study for international students.
Curriculum Overview
The HEP MPH program requires a minimum of 42-45 credit hours. This includes 24-27 credits of public health foundational competency courses and 18 population health concentration competency courses. Students receive training in areas such as:
Program planning and evaluation
Social determinants of health
Health communication
Quantitative and qualitative public health methods
Health behavior
Health policy
Leadership and systems thinking
All students will participate in an interprofessional education experience. A supervised practicum (field or professional experience) is required at the end of the degree, which includes an applied learning experience and an integrated learning experience where students demonstrate mastery of selected public health competencies.
Admissions Requirements
Prospective students must complete the online application , pay a $55 application fee, and have a 3.0 or higher GPA on their last 60 semester or 90 quarter credits. Required application materials include:
Transcripts of all college/university credits
Three contacts for letters of recommendation
A statement of purpose (included in the online application)
Applicants are not required to submit graduate entrance exam scores (e.g., GRE, MAT, etc.). However, if applicants believe their test scores can strengthen their application, they may submit them.

Graduates are well-prepared for careers in health care settings, academic institutions, local, state, and federal health agencies, private industry, non-profit organizations, community social service organizations, and international health programs. Potential positions include:
Epidemiologist/Statistician
Disaster and emergency specialist
Medical and health services manager
Public health educator
Public health nurse
Medical social worker
The program culminates in a supervised practicum, providing an applied learning experience and an integrated learning experience where students demonstrate mastery of public health competencies. Students form a graduate committee to assist in selecting a placement site and evaluating learning outcomes.
