General MPH Program at University of North Carolina Asheville Program Overview 2025
This program is no longer accepting new majors. The University is working with previously declared majors to create detailed teach-out programs so they may graduate successfully.
Program Highlights & Accreditation
The UNC Asheville-UNC Gillings Master of Public Health (MPH) is a joint degree program offered by UNC Asheville and the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. It is delivered on the campus of the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) in Asheville, N.C. Graduates receive a single diploma issued by both institutions.
The program features a concentration in Place-Based Health, which centers people and their communities as catalysts for transforming systems to promote wellbeing for all. It is characterized by small cohorts of up to 24 students, case and community-based activities, and instruction by interdisciplinary faculty and community practitioners who bring real-world experience to the classroom.
The University of North Carolina Asheville and UNC Chapel Hill are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award the MPH degree. The UNC Asheville-UNC Gillings MPH Program is an applicant for accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).
Delivery Modes
The MPH program is a full-time course of study, requiring approximately 30 to 40 hours a week of dedicated time. Courses are delivered in a hybrid format, including on-site classes one day per week and asynchronous online lectures and other activities.
Curriculum Overview
The program can typically be completed in four semesters. It includes a practicum experience during the summer.
