Program Highlights
The Master of Public Health (MPH) - Generalist program at the University of Memphis prepares graduates to effectively engage in public health work either locally or globally. It provides a breadth of both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Delivery Modes
The MPH program offers flexible learning options. Students can choose a traditional four-semester program or an accelerated track. The MPH-Generalist degree can be pursued in-person (on-campus), online, or through a hybrid model, accommodating both full-time and part-time students. The accelerated program allows for completion within 12 to 15 months.
Curriculum Overview
The MPH Generalist program requires 42 credit hours with a minimum 3.0 GPA for graduation. The curriculum includes:
18 hours of core courses (PUBH 7120, PUBH 7150, PUBH 7170, PUBH 7180, PUBH 7160, HADM 7105)
9 hours of generalist concentration courses (PUBH 7004, PUBH 7141, HADM 7110)
9 hours of elective courses
3 hours of practicum/field experience (PUBH 7985)
3 hours of thesis (PUBH 7996) or master's project (PUBH 7992)
Core courses cover Environmental Health, Biostatistical Methods, Epidemiology, Foundations of Public Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences Principles, and Health Policy and Organization of Health Services. The program culminates in a practicum/field experience and a choice between a master's project or thesis.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants must hold a bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited college or university with an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 4.00 scale) or a graduate cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher in the major subject area. Key requirements include:
A bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Three letters of recommendation (at least one from a former professor/instructor).
Statement of Purpose (US applicants: 400-500 words; International applicants: 750-1000 words).
CV/Resume.
International students: Transcripts evaluated by WES or NACES member; Test of English proficiency scores if prior education was not in English.
Prerequisites include at least one college-level course in general biology, mathematics (calculus or algebra), and a social science (sociology, anthropology, or psychology), along with basic computer skills. Courses in health-related fields and relevant work experience are desirable but not required.
Career & Practical Experience
Graduates will be prepared for quality mixed-methods research at the community level, project planning, implementation, and evaluation, and health impact assessment. The program provides a strong theoretical understanding of public health principles and a foundation in research methodology, implementation, communication, and program evaluation.
A Generalist MPH is highly valued in population health, clinical practices, and for those in or preparing for the clinical medical field. Graduates are also suited for research and policy roles. Practical experience is gained through a required practicum/field experience.
