Dual MPH/MBA Program

The Master of Business Administration/Master of Public Health (MBA/MPH) dual degree program is a collaborative venture between The University of Texas at San Antonio's Alvarez College of Business (ACOB) and The University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH). This program is designed for students aiming to merge expertise in business and management with skills to address critical health and healthcare challenges in public and private sectors globally. A key advantage is the potential for reduced costs by approximately 25% and a shorter completion time compared to pursuing both degrees independently. The Alvarez College of Business is AACSB accredited.

Curriculum Overview

The dual degree structure allows for shared crediting of some coursework, enabling students to complete both degrees in as little as three years. The MBA component requires 36 semester credit hours. Students can count up to 12 credit hours of approved graduate-level Public Health (PH) courses towards the MBA degree requirements.

The core MBA curriculum includes:

• MBA 5113 Business Foundations (3 credit hours)

• MBA 5133 Financial Accounting Concepts (3 credit hours)

• MBA 5233 Accounting Analysis for Decision Making (3 credit hours)

• MBA 5333 Financial Management (3 credit hours)

• MBA 5513 Managerial Economics (3 credit hours) OR PH 3910 Health Economics (3 credit hours)

• MBA 5213 Management & Behavior in Organizations (3 credit hours) OR PH 3744 Organizational Behavior in Healthcare Organizations (3 credit hours)

• MBA 5413 Management Science with Data Analytics (3 credit hours)

• MBA 5313 Marketing Management (3 credit hours)

• MBA 5613 Strategic Management & Policy (3 credit hours)

Students must also complete three electives (9 credit hours), which can include up to three PH courses from an advisor-approved list.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must submit an application through the UTSA Graduate Application for the MBA portion. For the MPH portion, a separate application is required to The University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) via the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS). Key requirements for the MBA component include:

• A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent foreign training.

• A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (consideration for last 60 credit hours; exceptions may apply).

• Adequate preparatory coursework.

• Official transcripts from all institutions attended (unofficial accepted for initial review).

• Credential evaluation (e.g., ECE) for foreign transcripts.

• GRE/GMAT scores are currently waived (not required for the 2024-25 application cycle).

• Proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores for international applicants).

• A statement of purpose.

• A current resume.

• Two letters of recommendation (academic or professional).
