Program Highlights & Accreditation

Meharry Medical College's Master of Public Health (MPH) program boasts a 50-year legacy of excellence, dedicated to training a diverse new generation of public health leaders, health equity champions, practitioners, and researchers. The program is focused on improving the health and well-being of people of color and underserved communities, striving to eradicate health disparities through educational excellence, evidence-based research, and culturally competent service.

The Public Health program is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

Mission: The mission of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at Meharry Medical College is to improve the health and well-being of people of color and underserved communities. We strive to eradicate health disparities, through educational excellence, evidence-based research, and culturally competent service.

Delivery Modes

The MPH program is delivered on-campus and is designed as a full-time program. While primarily in-person, select courses may be offered virtually. Most courses are offered during the daytime.

Curriculum Overview

The program requires a total of 45 credit hours. This includes 30 core credit hours and 15 elective credit hours, allowing students to tailor their education. The curriculum incorporates an Applied Practice Experience (practicum) and an Integrative Learning Experience (capstone) designed to provide hands-on expertise.

Students can choose one of two available tracks (concentrations):

  • Public Health Practice

  • Epidemiology

Admissions Requirements

Applications for the MPH program are processed through the centralized application service for public health (SOPHAS). The application deadline for Fall admission has been extended to May 1st, with application review beginning December 16th. The program is test-optional regarding GRE scores.

A complete SOPHAS application includes:

  • A resume or CV.

  • A personal statement highlighting career aspirations related to Public Health.

  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended.

  • Three academic or professional letters of recommendation (at least two from previous professors and one from an individual qualified to certify the applicant’s abilities and/or character, such as a mentor, academic advisor, or employment supervisor).

After review by the MPH admissions committee, qualified applicants will be asked to submit a supplemental Meharry application, which requires uploading a photo.

Cost & Financial Aid

The Master of Public Health program has an annual tuition of $29,278 and a per-credit-hour tuition rate of $1,219.92 for the academic year as listed. Additional annual student fees are approximately $5,151. Tuition and fees are subject to change. The School of Global Health will award a select number of partial scholarships for Fall 2025. To be considered, applicants must submit a completed application with all materials no later than December 15, 2024. Scholarship awards will be announced to recipients through a formal admissions decision letter.

Career & Practical Experience

The program prepares graduates for leadership roles, with over 300 alumni leading in academia, public health, and the private sector. Students gain hands-on expertise through the Applied Practice Experience and an Integrative Learning Experience, which are integral components of the curriculum.
