Dual MSN (Nursing Leadership and Management)/MPH Program

Program Highlights

The dual degree MSN: Nursing Leadership and Management and MPH@GW program at George Washington University offers a unique opportunity for nursing students seeking to supplement their nursing education with a public health focus. The MSN curriculum sharpens future nursing leaders' skills to implement improvements in the healthcare system and healthcare policies. Concurrently, the MPH curriculum equips students with the necessary skills to be leaders in designing population and community health programs in the United States and globally.

Public health coursework within the MPH program ensures students can assess and apply public health analytic and diagnostic tools from the unique perspective of nurse leaders, enabling them to better identify factors influencing community health. The MSN/MPH program aims to provide nurses with solid skills to develop health initiatives, improve wellness across populations, and address the social determinants of health.

Delivery Modes

The program can be completed on a full-time basis. The MPH@GW component, part of the dual degree, signifies an online learning format for the public health portion of the studies. Students are required to complete a Virtual New Student Orientation.

Curriculum Overview

The dual degree program consists of 60 credit hours. Students who complete all requirements for the MSN: Nursing Leadership and Management may petition to receive the MSN degree before completing the MPH@GW requirements. Required practicum courses include:

• NURS 6258: Leadership Capstone Practicum I (150 hours in a leadership practicum with public health focus. The preceptor needs to have a master's degree or higher.)

• NURS 6259: Practicum II (150 hours in a leadership practicum. The preceptor and associated site must be different than those chosen for NURS 6258.)

Admissions Requirements

This program is designed for working nurses interested in advancing their education to broaden their leadership role to include population and community health. A completed application includes the following components:

• Bachelor's degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university.

• Preferred scholastic GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

• Official transcripts (from all post-secondary schools).

• Two letters of recommendation.

• Current resume.

• Statement of Purpose.

• Active and unencumbered nursing licensure.

There are no specific prerequisite courses listed for this program.

Graduates are prepared for advanced leadership roles that integrate public health principles into community and population health management.
