The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) is designed for individuals aspiring to become change-agents who tackle pressing public health issues. The program focuses on protecting the health of communities by blending science and altruism, emphasizing the promotion of wellness, disease prevention, environmental protection, and efficient resource utilization.

The program offers flexibility with courses available online and through in-classroom evening sessions. This structure allows students to complete their degree within five semesters.

Curriculum Overview

The M.P.H. program offers three specialized tracks, each requiring 43 credit-hours:

• Epidemiology Track: Focuses on research, epidemiologic methods, and the study of infectious and chronic diseases.

• Health Management & Policy Track: Prepares students to manage complex healthcare institutions, organizations, and delivery systems, emphasizing skills in cost containment, marketing, finance, and economics.

• Applied Data Science Track: Provides hands-on skills in applying data science principles to process, visualize, and analyze health data using software like R, SAS, SQL, and Tableau.

EVMS also offers separate graduate certificates in areas such as Applied Data Science, Core Public Health, Epidemiology, and Healthcare Management.

Career & Practical Experience

Graduates are prepared for various roles depending on their chosen track. Epidemiologists are in demand in public health agencies and healthcare delivery systems. Health Management and Policy graduates can pursue mid- to executive-level management positions in hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, and government agencies. The Applied Data Science track equips students for roles involving health data analysis.
