Program Highlights & Accreditation
The Bastyr Master of Public Health (MPH) program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) . Bastyr University is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) . The MPH program focuses on community health education and covers the competencies required for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) certification exam.
A graduate of the Master of Public Health program will demonstrate competency in the following areas:
Evidence-based approaches to public health
Public health and health care systems
Planning and management to promote health
Policy in public health
Inter-professional practice
Leadership
Systems thinking
Assessment of individual and community needs for health education
Planning health education strategies, interventions, and programs
Implementing health education strategies, interventions, and programs
Conducting evaluation and research related to health education
Administering health education strategies, interventions, and programs
Serving as a health education resource person
Communicating and advocating for health and health education
Applying human rights and social justice principles to public health problems to support improved quality in and accessibility to health care and health education
Delivery Modes
The program is delivered on-campus, with a requirement for students to complete 43 credits in residence at Bastyr University. The curriculum is structured for full-time study over two years.
Curriculum Overview
Master of Public Health students must complete a minimum of 63 credits. This includes:
Core course credits: 48
Programmatic elective credits: 2
Practicum credits: 5
Capstone credits: 8
Students must complete 43 of these credits in residence at Bastyr University. Students must earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 and must complete their degree within five years following matriculation into the program.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Prerequisites include:
A minimum GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework.
An introductory statistics or biostatistics course.
Exceptional candidates who do not meet these requirements will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Qualified students will be invited to interview.
Career & Practical Experience
The program prepares graduates for careers in public health, particularly in community health education, and covers competencies for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) exam.
Practical experience is integrated through a 5-credit Practicum Experience in Public Health and an 8-credit Capstone Project.
